Chateauneuf-du-Pape Arcane V le Pape : A Divine and Atypical Wine

The fifth tarrot card from Marseille, the "major arcana" of the Pope symbolises the timeless power, knowledge and foresight into the future, in front of which servants kneel in a sign of respect. An exceptional wine produced in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation, the 2010 vintage of Arcane V the Pope is sure to seduce. Produced in very limited quantities (only 13 barrels in total), Xavier Vignon aimed to elaborate with this wine a pure expression of the Rhone Valley’s flagship grape. This 100% Grenache wine comes from 15 plots spread over different terroirs of the appellation.

Xavier Vignon has achieved an incredible technical feat by combining unprecedented winemaking processes and atypical vineyard practices. Once fermented, the wine is added to special barrels with a stainless steel strapping. The barrels are then immersed into vats filled with Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine. Protected in this way for 60 months from the effects of oxidation, the wine ages another year in bottle before its release.

With its fabulous inky purple colour, the Arcane V le Pape reveals an incredible bouquet of crushed flowers, black fruits and spices. On the palate, this wine offers a unique richness, volume and intensity of ripe fruits, as well as very present tannins. Singular, unique and exotic, the Chateauneuf-du-Pape Arcane V Le Pape 2010 will guarantee an unforgettable moment, best shared with loved ones.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
With regards to the 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape Arcane Le Pape, I had to have Xavier explain how he made it about three times before I understood. The wine is 100% Grenache, from 15 different parcels, that was put into a barrel, then the entire barrel was put into a concrete tank, which was then filled with wine. This is a take on the underwater aging process that some people experiment with, and the result is that's there's no exposure to oxygen whatsoever, and the wine was kept like this for five years, with no racking or topping (since there's no evaporation, it never needed to be topped). Inky purple in color, with a sensational, youthful bouquet of crushed flowers, blueberries, blackberries, cured meats and spice, it hits the palate with incredible richness, a thick, unctuous mid-palate and ripe, yet present tannin. It's a singular, exotic beauty that I wish every reader could taste! I've not a clue how it will age, given its crazy elevage, yet I suspect it will benefit from short-term cellaring and keep for two to three decades! Hats off to the team here for having the guts to pull something like this off!
