Description
The precision and richness of a Saumur white wine
The estate
In 1992, the young Thierry Germain left his native Bordeaux region and settled in the Anjou region. He took over the Roches Neuves estate, founded in 1850 and established in Varrains, near Saumur, in the Loire. Regarded as one of the greatest winemakers of his generation, Thierry Germain produces plot-based wines that precisely reflect the identity of the grape varieties grown on the estate and the chalky, tufa and sandy-clay soils of Anjou.
The Thierry Germain - Domaine des Roches Neuves terroir now covers 23 hectares of vines that are managed using organic and biodynamic practices, certified by Ecocert and Biodyvin. The soils are worked using a draught horse and grass cover-cropping is carried out.
The vineyard
Thierry Germain's "L'Insolite" cuvée - Domaine des Roches Neuves is a Saumur wine made from vineyards located in the localities of Les Cerpes and Saint-Vincent. The vines are planted on clay-limestone soils composed of silt and flint.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-picked grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation in tuns and barrels. Pneumatic pressing for 4 hours. Aged for nine months on fine lees.
The blend
Chenin Blanc (100%).
L'Insolite 2019 by Thierry Germain - Domaine des Roches Neuves: Characteristics and tasting tips
The tasting
Colour
This wine showcases a brilliant straw yellow colour.
Nose
The concentrated, fresh and full nose harmoniously blends fruity, floral and plant-like fragrances. When aerated, notes of white fruit (pear, peach), citrus (lemon, grapefruit), verbena and lime blossom emerge.
Palate
A smooth and precise attack is followed by a smooth and aromatic palate. Lively and opulent, the palate is seduced by notes of gentian, ginger and leads to a rich, structured finish.
