Saumur-Champigny

Created in 1957, Saumur-Champigny is an appellation that covers a total area of 1580 hectares, divided between the Chace, Dampierre-sur-Loire, Montsoreau, Parnay, Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, Saumur, Souzay-Champigny, Turquant and Varrains communes. The vines are planted in a semi-continental microclimate with a light oceanic influence. The soil is composed of clay-limestone, chalk, and sandy-clay. The appellation produces only red wines: Cabernet Franc (majority), Cabernet Sauvignon and Pineau d'Aunis. The wines from Saumur-Champigny are fresh and extremely tender. They can be concentrated as well as very light and aerial. Some cuvees are distinguished by their remarkable power and excellent ageing potential.
