Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Sandrone Luciano's Aleste 2022
Tasting
Colour
This wine displays a beautiful, brilliant ruby hue of medium to deep intensity.
Nose
The bouquet is particularly intense, revealing aromas of cherry and raspberry interwoven with notes of undergrowth, minerals, fresh spices and hints of oak.
Palate
Both robust and structured, the palate remains highly elegant, with no trace of heaviness. Red fruits take the lead at first, followed by spicy and oaky nuances. The powerful tannins will need a little patience to fully integrate. The long finish lingers on notes of red fruit and graphite, carried by a firm tannic frame.
Food and wine pairing
This cuvée is a wonderful match for rich, braised meats such as osso buco, roast duck with figs or game dishes. It also pairs perfectly with long-aged cheeses such as Parmesan or Castelmagno.
Serving and cellaring
The 2022 vintage is built for ageing and can be enjoyed until around 2045. For optimal enjoyment, it is best to wait until 2026 before opening.
An exceptional Barolo from Sandrone Luciano in the heart of Piedmont
The estate
Officially founded in 1978 by Luciano Sandrone, the estate is one of the leading names in Piedmont. After humble beginnings in a garage in 1977, it rose to the very top of its appellation. Today, following the passing of its founder, the estate is run by his daughter Barbara, his brother Luca and his wife Mariuccia. They passionately tend a vineyard of around 27 hectares spread across the Langa and the Roero, perpetuating a unique style that brilliantly combines tradition and modernity.
The vineyard
The grapes come exclusively from the famous historic hill of Cannubi Boschis, in the village of Barolo. Farmed by the estate since 1985, this plot enjoys a fine south-east-facing exposure. The vines thrive on moderately compact marl soils, a terroir renowned for giving the wine great elegance and remarkable transparency.
The vintage
2022 was marked by the resilience of the vines in the face of challenging weather conditions. After a dry autumn and snowfall in December, the winter was mild and dry, punctuated by a brief cold spell. Spring brought much-needed rain before giving way to a hot, dry period. Fortunately, cool nights helped to balance the temperatures. Ripening accelerated, leading to a harvest around two weeks earlier than usual, between 26 September and 6 October. Although smaller, the berries proved perfectly healthy, with a fine balance of acidity and fruit.
Winemaking and ageing
For this cuvée, fermentation begins spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Maceration and alcoholic fermentation take place in open steel vats, followed by full malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged in 500-litre French oak casks. Finally, this Italian wine rests for a further 18 months in bottle before release.
