The mineral expression of a blue schist terroir in Alsace
The estate
Founded in 1808 in the Rhône Valley, the Maison M. Chapoutier stands as a leading reference in French viticulture. Under the impetus of Michel Chapoutier, now supported by his children Mathilde and Maxime, the estate undertook a major shift by adopting biodynamic practices as early as the 1990s. Driven by a desire to explore new terroirs, the family established itself in Alsace with Domaine Schieferkopf, illustrating its constant pursuit of the authentic expression of soils through wines of character.
The vineyard
Located in Alsace, the vineyard extends at an altitude of 380 meters on steep slopes reaching up to 30% incline. The vines benefit from ideal south and south-east exposures for optimal ripening. The uniqueness of this terroir lies in its subsoil, composed of a rare vein of blue schist dating back to the Precambrian era. This ancient, well-drained soil, cultivated with respect for the environment, gives the grapes a distinctive mineral signature.
The vintage
The 2025 vintage is marked by great earliness, linked to a warm and dry spring and early summer, followed by a cooler and wetter end of the season. After a winter favorable to water reserves, the vine developed rapidly, despite yields limited by the small size of the grape clusters. Rain at the end of July accelerated ripening, allowing harvesting to begin as early as September 16. The wines stand out for their finesse, precision, and tension, with beautiful aromatic intensity and well-preserved minerality.
Winemaking and aging
The Riesling "Lieu-dit Berg" Domaine Schieferkopf 2025 harvest is carried out manually in small crates. In the cellar, the grapes undergo prolonged pressing, followed by cold static settling. Alcoholic fermentation starts naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts, followed by complete malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for fifteen months in traditional oak foudres to preserve the purity of its aromas.
Grape variety
This "Lieu-dit Berg" Domaine Schieferkopf 2025 by M. Chapoutier is made from 100% Riesling.
