Vinous

Nicolas Greinacher

Aged for 22 months in new French oak barriques, the 2023 Saint-Joseph Anges projects wood smoke, ripe blackberry, black cherry and hints of graphite. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, the 2023 is a brash take on the appellation, drawing gently forward with a trace of heat on the woody finish.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Louis Chèze's 2023 Saint-Joseph "Anges"

Tasting

Colour
Remarkably clear, this wine reveals a deep, limpid ruby hue.

Nose
Highly complex, the bouquet reveals aromas of black fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry. With aeration, it unfolds notes of sweet spices like nutmeg and black pepper, subtly complemented by woody touches of vanilla and toasted caramel.

Palate
The attack is bold and generous, offering a velvety texture. The tannins, well present, are harmonious and remarkably fine. The particularly long finish extends the tasting experience with notes of black fruits and spices.

Food and wine pairing

This cuvée pairs wonderfully with braised red meats, game in sauce such as venison stew, or grilled beef cuts. It also goes beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate this 2023 vintage, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, decanting it two to four hours beforehand. This wine will reveal its full potential over time and will continue to evolve favourably, drinking well through to around 2038.

Other characteristics

In order to preserve all of its organoleptic qualities and texture, this wine is bottled in a single pass and without any prior filtration.

The aromatic complexity and elegance of a red wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Taken over in 1978, the family-run Louis Chèze estate is located on the right bank of the Rhône Valley. Starting with just one hectare, the estate now spans forty-five hectares across prestigious appellations. Driven by respect for the terroir and a philosophy of authenticity, the estate has recently begun a generational transition. Since January 2026, official management has been handled by the founder's children, Benoit and Camille Chèze, who continue the family's expertise with the same rigour and passion for winemaking excellence.

The vineyard

Although the estate's historic cradle lies within the Saint-Joseph appellation, this particular cuvée comes from a two-hectare plot nestled on the hillsides of Limony, at an altitude of three hundred metres. Benefiting from an ideal south-southeast exposure, the old vines, around fifty years old, thrive on light, shallow soils composed of granitic elements and dark migmatite. Planting density is high, at eight thousand vines per hectare, and yields are deliberately limited to encourage berry concentration. The vineyard is managed according to the principles of sustainable farming.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes for the 2023 "Anges" cuvée are harvested by hand into small crates. After an initial sorting in the vineyard, the bunches are 100% destemmed and then sorted again on a vibrating table. The lightly crushed berries are transferred into vats by gravity. Maceration and fermentation take place in small, temperature-controlled tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in barrels. The wine is then aged entirely in new oak barrels for twenty-two months.
