Description

A dry white Bordeaux with a silky texture and lovely freshness

The estate
Created in 1832, Château Cheval Blanc is a leading name in Saint-Émilion. Owned since 1998 by Bernard Arnault and the Frère family, the estate was led from 1990 by Pierre Lurton and since 2023 by Pierre-Olivier Clouet. With a new winery designed by Christian de Portzamparc and inaugurated in June 2011, Château Cheval Blanc continues to write the legend of the greatest Bordeaux wines.

The vineyard
Offering a superb introduction to the excellence of Cheval Blanc’s grand vin, Petit Cheval is a dry white Bordeaux wine from a vineyard that benefits from meticulous canopy management, with light leaf removal on the sunrise side to homogenize ripeness and reduce Sauvignon Blanc’s varietal notes, thereby favoring the floral, fruity, and mineral profiles characteristic of the terroir.

The vintage
The year 2023 saw no extreme weather events, with regular rainfall throughout the year. The 65 mm of rain in August, slightly above average, supported the ripening of the grapes. Harvest took place from August 23 to 29, 2023, in grouped selections, accompanied by late-August heatwaves.

Winemaking and aging
After pressing, the must for Petit Cheval 2023 is lightly clarified before fermenting in various vessels: 600-liter demi-muids, 15 hL foudres, and wooden vats of 15, 20, 25, and 30 hL. Lees work includes daily bâtonnage initially, then reduced according to tastings. Blending is carried out in February for a total aging period of 18 months.

Grape varieties
Sauvignon Blanc (73%) and Sémillon (27%).
