Marks and reviews
Domaine E. Guigal was founded in 1946 in Ampuis by Etienne Guigal. His son, Marcel, took over in 1961. Today, the third generation continues the heritage and values of this emblematic Rhône Valley family estate.
Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage: the E. Guigal estate oversees a mosaic of vineyards placed in numerous appellations which make up a range of Rhône Valley wines of irreproachable quality.
Over the vintages, the E. Guigal house has seen huge development, notably becoming the owner in 1995 of the famous Château d’Ampuis, as well as many other winegrowing estates (Jean-Louis Grippat, domaine de Vallouit, Domaine de Bonserine and Château de Nalys, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape).
This emblematic cuvée is a Côte-Rôtie wine that stems from plots on short terraces. The vines are around 35 years old, planted on clay-limestone soils which are very rich in iron oxides.
Winemaking and ageing
Following the harvests, the grapes were sorted. They were then vinified in closed stainless steel vats. Regular punching of the cap, temperature control of the fermentation and maceration for nearly 3 weeks. This Rhone wine is matured exclusively in new barrels for 40 months.
The wine is of a nearly black red adorned with very dark highlights.
The nose releases intense notes of little black fruit, leather and roasted scents, mingled with aromas of licorice and spices.
The powerful and expressive palate charms with its solid structure and concentrated tannins.
For the best tasting, serve between 16°C and 18°C.
This wine can be aged for a long time, and can be laid down until around 2049.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs perfectly with large game like a leg of venison.
