Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Marcel Guigal finds working in Hermitage the most difficult given the extremely high prices asked by growers as well as the difficulty in finding top cuvees. However, he buys from very good producers, and in 1997 has fashioned an excellent, seductive Hermitage rouge. It possesses a dense ruby color, abundant cassis fruit, excellent texture, sweet tannin, and a low acid, long finish. It is a wine to drink over the next 10-12 years. Wine Spectator

Ripe and sweet-tasting, very supple and silky, with plenty of fruit. Tastes so seductive you can drink it now. Full-bodied, it has a fresh, juicy character, but lacks a bit of terroir complexity. Best from 2002 through 2010. 2,500 cases made.

Vinous

Stephen Tanzer

Red-ruby color. Superripe aromas of currant, leather, roasted herbs and tobacco; a bit evolved for such a young Hermitage. Fat and rich but a bit lacking in verve today. Finishes with slightly dry-edged tannins. Perhaps going through an awkward stage.

Description

The complexity and aromatic power of a red wine from Hermitage signed E. Guigal

The property

The E. Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal, in Ampuis. His son, Marcel, took over in 1961. Today, the 3rd generation continues the legacy and values of this iconic family house in the Rhône Valley.

Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, the E. Guigal estate oversees a mosaic of vineyards located in numerous appellations that form a range of wines of impeccable quality.

Over the vintages, the E. Guigal house has experienced strong growth, notably becoming the owner in 1995 of the famous Château d’Ampuis, as well as several wine estates (Jean-Louis Grippat, Domaine de Vallouit, Domaine de Bonserine or even the Château de Nalys, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape).

The vineyard

A reference among the wines of Hermitage, this cuvée comes from the Beaumes, Méal, Bessards and Hermite plots. About 30 years old, the vines are planted on clay-limestone and sandy-gravelly soils.

Vinification and aging

After manual harvesting, the grapes are rigorously sorted. Vinification takes place in closed stainless steel vats. Regular punch-downs and temperature control for nearly 3 weeks. The aging of this Rhône wine is about 36 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new.
