Wine Spectator

Kristen Bieler

Smoldering incense and sweet red fruit introduce this ripe red, with a plush, glossy texture and elegance despite the ripeness. Mulberry and juniper detail the smoky, graphite-edged finish, which is firm and focused. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2031. 10,000 cases made, 1,100 cases imported.

Robert Parker

Yohan Castaing

The Guigal family crafted an elegant, attractive 2021 Gigondas that offers aromas of lilac, flowers, mulberries and dark berries. Medium- to full-bodied, sappy and suave, it’s enrobing, with a juicy core of fruit, sweet tannins and good depth at the core, concluding with a long, perfumed finish.

The indulgence and balance of a red wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Domaine E. Guigal was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis. His son, Marcel, succeeded him in 1961. Today, the 3rd generation carries on the heritage and values of this emblematic family-run Rhône Valley estate. Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage: the E. Guigal estate tends a mosaic of vineyards across numerous appellations, producing a range of Rhône Valley wines of impeccable quality.

Over the vintages, Maison E. Guigal has expanded significantly, notably acquiring the famous Château d’Ampuis in 1995, as well as several wine estates (Jean-Louis Grippat, Domaine de Vallouit, Domaine de Bonserine, and Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape).

The vineyard

This Gigondas wine comes from vines around 40 years old, rooted in ancient alluvial soils and red clays, with stony slopes in places.

Winemaking and aging

After harvest, the grapes undergo a long maceration. Aging lasts 2 years in oak foudres, 50% of which are new.

Grape varieties

Grenache (70%), Syrah (20%) and Mourvèdre (10%).
