Yves Beck

A terroir planted parallel to Altenberg. The vines were planted in 2002 on friable Aalenian limestone soils, with an east-facing exposure. Aged 50% in barrels that have seen several fills and 50% in sandstone eggs. The bouquet reveals a markedly different style, focused on hazelnut and bread-dough nuances before showing delicate hints of flinty notes and citrus. A saline attack sets the tone for a subtle, harmonious wine. Driven by an elegant acidity, it offers fine bitter notes that bring energy and freshness through to the finish. A structured, subtle wine that deserves a little time in the cellar.

Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for the "Schoffweg" 2023 Domaine Marcel Deiss

Tasting

Color
Displaying beautiful clarity, this French white wine reveals a brilliant pale gold hue.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet stands out for its complexity, blending scents of white-fleshed fruit, honey, and vanilla, subtly enhanced by herbaceous nuances and a mineral backbone.

Palate
The palate opens with a rich, full-bodied texture that coats the mouth with impressive length. This tactile richness is perfectly balanced by a lively, fresh, and deeply mineral finish.

Food and wine pairing

This great white wine pairs wonderfully with delicate freshwater fish such as pikeperch or pike, ravioli, or seafood in puff pastry. It will also beautifully enhance mushroom-based dishes or Asian recipes flavored with ginger and lemongrass.

Service and storage

Boasting remarkable aging potential, the "Schoffweg" 2023 can be cellared and enjoyed until approximately 2044.

Other characteristics

This vintage stands out for its lovely concentration paired with a moderate alcohol level.

The authentic expression of Alsace terroir by Domaine Marcel Deiss

The estate

Founded in 1947 in Bergheim, Domaine Marcel Deiss is an iconic name in the Alsace vineyards. While the family heritage dates back to 1744, it was under the leadership of Jean-Michel Deiss in the 1980s that the estate revolutionized the region by reintroducing co-planting and pioneering biodynamic farming. Today, the estate is run by Mathieu Deiss, supported by his father. Spanning between 26 and 32 hectares, the estate is defined by its unwavering commitment to letting the terroir express itself beyond the grape varieties.

The vineyard

Located in Alsace, the "Schoffweg" terroir rises to about 340 meters in altitude, in an extension of the famous Altenberg de Bergheim. East-facing and subject to intense natural ventilation, the vines were planted in 1997 at a high density of 12,000 vines per hectare. They thrive on a thin layer of Aalenian limestone bedrock, forcing the root system to dig deep for resources. The whole vineyard is farmed according to organic and biodynamic principles.

The vintage

The year 2023 was marked by exceptional drought, making it the third consecutive year of water deficit. September even recorded unprecedented heat levels not seen since 1947. However, the limestone soils of this plot played a crucial role in retaining the necessary moisture, allowing the berries to reach optimal concentration while preserving lovely acidity.

Winemaking and aging

Following hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting, the whole clusters of the "Schoffweg" 2023 undergo a very slow pressing lasting around twelve hours. The juices then ferment thanks to indigenous yeasts, without prior settling, through a natural process that can span several months. Aging takes place on full lees, with no stirring, for twelve months in old foudres or wooden barrels, before a very light filtration.

Grape varieties

This wine comes from a co-planting of Riesling, Pinot Gris, Muscat, and potentially Chasselas.
