Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Burlenberg 2022 Domaine Marcel Deiss
Tasting
Colour
This French red wine reveals a deep hue, enhanced by warm brick highlights that reflect a beautiful concentration.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet proves particularly complex, dominated by black and red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and plum. These are interwoven with subtle notes of undergrowth, bitter chocolate, and spices, rounded out by herbal, mineral touches and a fine woody note.
Palate
Full-bodied and warm, the palate offers a tender texture supported by young, very well-rounded tannins. It reveals a lovely richness of wild berries and an earthy core, all perfectly balanced by just the right acidity. The finish lingers beautifully on superb mineral and saline notes, while a touch of Pinot Beurot lends suppleness and elegance to the whole.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs wonderfully with red meats such as filet mignon or lamb pan-seared with herbs, as well as with duck breast served with cherries. It also perfectly accompanies small game, pigeon, mushroom-based dishes like risotto, roasted root vegetables, or a platter of matured cheeses such as Comté, Gruyère, Cantal, and Brie.
Service and storage
Approachable even in its youth, this Burlenberg 2022 has a structure that allows it to age very favourably in the cellar. It can be enjoyed until around 2042.
The excellence of Alsatian terroir revealed by Domaine Marcel Deiss
The estate
Officially founded in 1947 upon the return from the Second World War, Domaine Marcel Deiss is an essential reference in Alsace. Spanning a 26-hectare vineyard, the estate is now run by Jean-Michel Deiss and his son Mathieu. The domaine stands out for its innovative philosophy centred on co-planting and demanding biodynamic viticulture, favouring the pure expression of the terroir over that of the grape variety. This distinctive approach creates wines of great complexity, recognised among the finest in the region.
The vineyard
Located in the heart of Alsace, in the commune of Bergheim, the terroir of the Burlenberg premier cru benefits from a warm, sheltered microclimate. Nicknamed the "burnt hill," this plot rests on fossil-rich Jurassic limestone soils reminiscent of the great Burgundian terroirs. The vines, planted between 1977 and 1997, are cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles. A very high planting density, sometimes exceeding 4,000 vines per hectare, encourages natural competition that limits yields and concentrates the quality of the grapes.
The vintage
Despite complex weather conditions throughout the growing season, 2022 produced berries of excellent ripeness, yielding rich fruit with a beautiful depth of colour.
Winemaking and ageing
True to the domaine's co-planting philosophy, the various grape varieties that make up this Burlenberg 2022 are harvested simultaneously and then co-fermented, allowing for perfect integration from the very start of fermentation. The wine then undergoes careful ageing in barrels for 24 months to refine its structure and aromatic complexity.
Grape varieties
This wine comes from a co-planting dominated by Pinot Noir, combined with a small proportion of Pinot Beurot (Pinot Gris), as well as Pinot Meunier and Pinot Blanc.
