Vinum

Lively, with firm but not harsh tannins, a precise expression of fruity, raspberry notes. Pleasing.

James Molesworth

This has a core of lightly steeped damson plum and black cherry fruit, liberally infused with rooibos tea and savory notes. A gentle iron twinge permeates the silky finish and adds length. Drink now through 2030.

Decanter

Run by Oliver Bernard and the team at Domaine de Chevalier, this is silky and beautifully rounded with carefully placed tannins. A real success in this vintage and just brilliant value. Not as well known as it should be.

James Suckling

This is awash with ripe raspberries and boysenberries, dusted in vanilla, as well as blackberry compote. The palate has a very plush and energetic feel and radiates a sense of freshness and balance. Great care has been taken in every step of making this rising star of quality and value. A blend of 55 percent cabernet sauvignon and 45 percent merlot. Try from 2022.

The 2016 Domaine de la Solitude has an attractive nose of brambly red berry fruit laced with melted tar and tobacco aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little compact but harmonious toward the finish, where hints of fresh fig infuse the vivacious red fruit. Excellent.

Medium-bodied, easy-to-discover personality, with just enough smoky cherries, earth and tobacco to keep it interesting, all the way through to its soft-textured finish.

Made by the team at Domaine de Chevalier, the 2016 Domaine de la Solitude is a classic Graves effort offering lots of meaty black cherry, tobacco, loamy earth, and underbrush aromatics. Layered, medium-bodied, with good acidity, and an inherent elegance, drink it over the coming 10-15 years. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot.

Bettane+Desseauve

Delicately spicy, fruity nose with notes of warm stone; a very refined palate, savory flesh, silky-grained tannins, and an excellent fresh finish. All in elegance.

Description

The aromatic finesse and freshness of an exceptional Pessac-Léognan wine

The estate

The origin of the name of the Domaine de La Solitude is to be found in the rule of the Holy Family community: to pray in the silence of solitude. This religious order settled on the estate in the 19th century. The sisters decided to entrust the winegrowing management of this Pessac-Léognan to outside parties. Since 1993, Olivier Bernard has been in charge of the management of the estate. A very old estate in Martillac, Domaine de la Solitude stands out for the quality of its wines, which are very good value for money, accessible in their youth, and promised to develop well.

The vineyard

Located in Pessac-Léognan, the Domaine de la Solitude’s red vineyard stretches across 30 hectares of gravelly soils on clay-gravel subsoils.

The vintage

Although the beginning of the year was very wet from January to the end of June, advancing the growth of the vines, a few days of good weather at the beginning of June allowed for a very beautiful flowering. Summer conditions were particularly hot (one of the driest summers in a century) and favourable to the development of the tannins. September saw a hoped-for arrival of refreshing rain that accelerated ripening. The Indian summer from mid-September to the end of October combined with cool nights allowed the harvest of fully ripe grapes.

Winemaking and ageing

Harvests done by hand from 28 September to 20 October. Sorting on the table. Vatting by gravity. Aged for 1 year in barrels. First months of ageing on lees.

Blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (58%)
Merlot (37%)
Petit Verdot (5%)
