Wine Spectator

A graceful red, showing lovely balance. Structured by refreshing blood orange peel acidity and light, supple tannins enmeshed with a pure beam of crushed boysenberry and mulberry fruit, floral, dried thyme, licorice root and mineral notes. Drink now through 2035. 2,262 cases made.

A difficult vintage has delivered more tannins to the wine, but it is nevertheless fresh and nervy, with grilled grapefruit, white pepper and hibiscus. Structured in terms of the firmness and the quantity of the tannins. It’s very different from the 2021 vintage, which shows nimbleness and agility. Vertical but still quite bright. It needs two more years to come around. Drink from 2026.

Tank sample. Sourced across the Palacios vineyards in Corullón. Fragrant, inviting nose with violets and red-berry fruit. Restrained spice notes, light and fine tannins, hint of aniseed to finish, all wrapped up with bright, freshening acidity. Approachable now. (AWH)

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Villa de Corullon 2022 by Descendientes de Jose Palacios

Tasting

This Spanish wine opens with subtle floral aromas, followed by lively cherry notes. The palate reveals an elegant, well-balanced texture, while the finish, carried by delicate, refreshing acidity, brings a pleasant freshness.

The balance and elegance of a red wine from Castile and León

The estate

An illustrious winemaker behind the qualitative revolution of Spanish wines over the past twenty years, Alvaro Palacios founded the Descendientes de J. Palacios estate with his nephew, Ricardo Perez, with the ambition of revealing the enormous potential of the DO (Denominación de Origen) Bierzo. This family wine estate is named after Alvaro’s father and Ricardo’s grandfather, who passed away in 2000.

Their choice settled on the town of Corullón, in the autonomous community of Castile and León in Spain, due to its singular terroir. As trailblazers, passionate and exacting, Alvaro Palacios and Ricardo Perez craft wines that authentically express the diversity and richness of the DO Bierzo’s terroirs. These great wines are recognized as among the most emblematic of the appellation.

The vineyard

Villa de Corullon by Descendientes de Jose Palacios is produced from 200 small plots of vines aged 50 to 90 years within the village of Corullon.

Covering 10.5 hectares, this steep terroir, located between 500 and 950 meters in altitude, owes its singularity to the heterogeneity of its soils, composed of schist, quartzite, silicate, sand, sandstone, and clay. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically in keeping with the traditional methods of the Bierzo.

Winemaking and aging

The harvested grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats, accompanied by regular punch-downs. Maceration lasts 30 days. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation in oak vats. Aging takes place in barrels and foudres.

Blend

Villa de Corullon by Descendientes de Jose Palacios is 100% Mencía.
