Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Barolo Mosconi "Vigna Ped" 2022 from Conterno Fantino
Tasting
Appearance
This wine reveals a deep garnet red hue, adorned with ruby reflections that are beginning to show subtle orange nuances on the rim of the glass.
Nose
Highly complex, the bouquet opens with aromas of dried flowers, wax and liquorice, enhanced by hints of blackberry and balsamic notes. With aeration, it releases scents of black cherry, prune and macerated flowers, perfectly integrated with delicate mineral and menthol nuances.
Palate
Broad and concentrated, the attack delivers a fine texture supported by a crisp acidity. The tannins, both firm and ripe, structure the palate through to a persistent finish, marked by earthy and mineral accents.
Food and wine pairings
This red wine pairs wonderfully with rich, structured dishes. It will sublimate roasted red meats such as beef or lamb, game in sauce, as well as aged hard cheeses such as Parmesan. It can also be enjoyed on its own, as a meditation wine.
Serving and cellaring
With remarkable ageing potential, this Barolo Mosconi "Vigna Ped" 2022 will reward long cellaring and can evolve favourably over several decades.
The unique expression of Nebbiolo by the Conterno Fantino estate
The estate
Founded in 1982 by Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino, the Conterno Fantino estate has established itself as an essential benchmark in Piedmont, Italy. Located on the heights of Monforte d'Alba, the property is still run today by its founders, supported by Alda, Guido's wife, as well as by the new generation embodied by Fabio, the cellar master, Elisa, Noemi and Matteo. Pioneers at heart, they have succeeded in challenging traditional codes by adopting innovative methods while preserving the identity of their terroir. The estate also stands out for its early commitment to organic viticulture.
The vineyard
The grapes for this cuvée come from the prestigious Mosconi cru, located in the commune of Monforte d'Alba, within the Barolo appellation area. The "Vigna Ped" plot, covering approximately one hectare, reaches an altitude of 400 metres and benefits from a south and south-east exposure. The vines, the oldest of which were planted in 1960 and supplemented by a massal selection in 1999, thrive on soils composed of silt, sand and clay. The vineyard is cultivated according to the principles of organic agriculture, with spontaneous grass cover and manual harvesting.
The vintage
The 2022 season was marked by a particularly warm growing period, leading to a very rapid ripening of the grapes. These exceptional weather conditions resulted in the earliest harvest recorded in the region since 1989, completed by the end of September.
Vinification and ageing
After a manual harvest at optimal ripeness, the grapes of the Barolo Mosconi "Vigna Ped" 2022 ferment in stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature, with a skin maceration of approximately ten days. Malolactic fermentation then takes place in French oak barrels. Finally, the wine is aged for two years, divided between barriques and larger-capacity casks, combining new and used wood for subtle integration.
Grape variety
Nebbiolo (100%).
