Vinum

Seductive nose of spices and herbs, dense and balanced, with fresh, lively tannins; true to itself. Needs cellar aging.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Nicely rendered, with singed sandalwood and dark tea notes running along the edges, while flavors of plum sauce and red currant preserves fill out the core. Lightly briary tannins and a hint of cedar lend a lightly firm edge, but this stays fine-grained overall. Best from 2015 through 2021. 2,000 cases made.

Decanter

Seductive nose full of pink flowers, black fruits and cola cubes. Bright and playful, juicy and quite tannic, but not as wide and expansive as some, more delicate if I can say that. Still packs a punch in terms of flavour, but everything is just dialed down a touch. Tannins are smooth and silky, and this feels like a good time to begin to drink this wine. Juicy red berry fruit, fleshy ripe-salty tannins, excellent lift and so many touches of minerality, saltiness and limestone aspects. Relaxed and totally charming. You've got to love the fruit forwardness and the full expression of this, it's not a 'light' non structured wine, but this really delivers on something quite playful and appealing right now.

Leve Jeff

With a high percentage of Cabernet Franc at 48%, 50% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine is light ruby in color with a lighter style of St Emilion featuring finesse and a kirsch-filled finish. 88-90 pts

Description

A delicate and well-balanced Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé

The estate

The origin of the name "Trottevieille" dates back several hundred years. Legend has it that there was once a stagecoach stop near the château. As soon as a team stopped, an elderly lady trotted down to get the news, hence the name “Trotte Vieille” (meaning “the Trot of the Elderly”). This Premier Grand Cru Classe of Saint-Émilion, Château Trotte Vieille, is home to a small parcel of vines rescued from the terrible damage caused by phylloxera during the second half of the 19th century.

The vineyard

Superbly situated on the top of the Saint-Emilion plateau and extending over 10 hectares in a single block, the south-west facing vineyard of Château Trotte Vieille has a terroir of reddish soil on limestone rock.

The blend

Château Trotte Vieille 2011 comprises a blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernet Franc (48%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (2%).
