Decanter

This wine sneaks up on you; it needs time to seduce, revealing fresh, floral aromas with graphite. The chiseled palate — fresh and concentrated, yet subtle — conveys elegance with vivacity and lift on the long finish, with more floral notes and spice coming from a high percentage of Petit Verdot. A beautiful wine that needs time.

Notes of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, vanilla, licorice and dark chocolate with touches of earthiness and nutmeg-like spice. Medium-bodied with ripe, velvety tannins and delicious fruit. Polished and refined. Try after 2023.

The 2019 Meyney is a deep, powerful wine. It shows all the richness and intensity that are such signatures, but with that added kick of vibrancy that has become the norm in recent years. Tobacco, cedar, wild flowers, mint and incense add layers of nuance to a core of red/purplish fruit. The 2019 is beautifully done.

Showing much better in bottle than it did from the barrel, the deeply colored wine is imbued with cigar box, tobacco leaf, spice, espresso, wet earth, and dark currants and blackberries. On the palate, the wine focuses on its medium/full-bodied core of ripe, sweet, dark red fruits, soft tannins, and a polished finish, with a light kiss of chocolate on the endnote. Drink from 2025–2042.

Falstaff

Falstaff

This has a dark ruby color, with purple reflections, and a subtle bright rim. There are aromas of ripe berry fruit, cherry compote, vanilla, and candied orange zest. It shows medium complexity, with red cherry and some minerality, and it is somewhat rough, appearing delicately over-extracted. It will benefit from bottle aging.

Pure nose offering ripe dark cabernet notes, sage and mint with cassis and crushed dark berries and a hint of new oak. The palate is still tight but good concentration, attractive fruit and a long lingering finish. To drink from 2024.

Cassis, currants, ripe tobacco, and cedar pencil notes define the bouquet of the 2019 Château Meyney, a medium- to full-bodied, concentrated Saint-Estèphe that shows the elegant, moderately concentrated, yet nicely structured and balanced style of the vintage. It’s already accessible with a decant but will benefit from just a handful of years in the cellar and has 15 years or more of longevity.

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 16% Petit Verdot. Purple with a ruby rim. Delicate, blueberry-driven bouquet with Brazilian tobacco and light noble wood, followed by elderberry jelly and chocolate pastilles. On the elegant palate with a silky texture and a supportive tannic framework; vibrant verve. A focused finish with wild cherries and dried thyme, ending with gentle astringency. Not as loud as 2018 or 2015, it has deliberately chosen a classic path, potential rating.

Kunz 2020 barrel sample: concentrated, profound, dark bouquet of cassis, plums, dark tobacco, truffle, graphite, noble woods, currants. Powerful, dense, aromatic palate with intense dark fruit, lots of fine tannins, a velvety, elegant, muscular structure, complex dark aromatics, and a long, powerful, finely opulent finish with plenty of lingering flavors. Can still improve.

Concentrated, deep, dark bouquet: cassis, plums, dark tobacco, truffle, graphite, fine woods, currants. Powerful, dense, aromatic palate with bold dark fruit, plenty of fine tannins, a velvety, elegant, muscular structure, complex dark aromatics, and a long, powerful, finely opulent finish with many lingering flavors. Can improve further. 18/20 2026 - 2055

There is no doubt that the 2019 is a success that will mark a milestone in the modern history of the cru. The sap, the structure and the substance are superb, carried by Meyney’s terroir and its ability to deliver great freshness. It is obviously far from ready, but its potential is undeniable.

Le Figaro Vin

A nose like a springtime smile, seducing with shimmering fruit. It reveals notes of pink peppercorns, black pepper, and flowers. The palate is both fresh and dense, with a savory, sanguine complexity and perfectly controlled bitters. The high point of the shift achieved in recent years, this Meyney is now ready to play in the big league.

The bouquet of the 2019 stands out for its freshness and refined fruit. Such relevance, precision and elegance! On the palate, the wine reveals itself with serenity. It controls its power and shows brilliant balance. This is surely the nature of a great wine: to shine without being demonstrative, simply to shine for what it is, and this is precisely where Meyney manages to stand out; it is a great wine. We know it, and we should not hesitate to shout it from the rooftops! It teases the magnificent 2016 and has plenty of time to challenge it, to our greatest delight!

Logo on the cork: LA Dark, intense, and beautiful color. Very aromatic nose, delicate, fruity, pure, and subtle. Caressing on the attack, very fruity mid-palate and rather perfumed for a Saint-Estèphe, the wine offers a refined tannic structure that lingers. Good length.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

A solid, slightly burly version, featuring streaks of tar and bay leaf mixed with dark plum and black currant preserve flavors. The finish is underscored by a warm paving stone note, which adds cut, drive and a hint of old school. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2036. 16,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 16% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Meyney is deep garnet-purple in color. It gives up notes of cedar and pencil lead over a core of crushed blackcurrants, kirsch, and wild blueberries with a touch of Sichuan pepper. The medium-bodied palate is lively and chewy, with just enough fruit and a savory finish.

93–95. Barrel Sample. From a reliable estate, this wine is firm in feel. It also has open black fruits that pair alongside the generous tannins. It is good long-term aging.

Description

A fine red wine from Saint-Estèphe

The estate
Situated on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Château Meyney enjoys an exceptional location, near the Gironde estuary. With origins dating back to 1662, this property of the subsidiary Crédit Agricole Grands Crus has experienced a remarkable rise in quality in recent decades. The wines of Château Meyney are among the most beautiful references of the Saint-Estèphe appellation and the Médoc in general.

The vineyard

Neighbouring that of Château Montrose, the vineyard of Château Meyney extends over fifty hectares, all in one piece. The vineyard is planted in soils of Garonne gravel with one notable particularity. A vein of blue clay 3 metres thick, like the one found on the terroir of Pétrus, lies buried in the subsoil.

The vintage
2019 will mark the history of Château Meyney as a particularly sunny year, surprising and magnificent at the same time. After a dry and mild winter, the rainy spring did not threaten the health of the vineyard. The wonderful summer season, characterised by high temperatures, favoured a good ripeness of the grapes. The harvest began on September 24 and ended on October 11. 2019 is a vintage that highlights the specificities of the terroir and the climate of the year. Endowed with great richness, the grapes already foreshadowed the birth of a historic vintage at this renowned Saint-Estèphe estate.

The winemaking
Once the manual harvest has been carried out, the grapes are sorted twice, first manually then optically. The grapes are then vinified on a parcel-by-parcel basis. After cold pre-fermentation maceration, alcoholic fermentation begins. The malolactic fermentation of the wines take place in new barrels.

The ageing
The First Wine of the property, Château Meyney 2019 is aged in French oak barrels (35% new wood).

The blend
The Château Meyney 2019 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), supplemented with Merlot (27%) and Petit Verdot (16%).
