With its origins dating back to the 12th century, Château Margaux is one of those Grand Crus that have built the legend of great Bordeaux wines around the world. In 1855, the château was awarded the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé, and was the only one of the four châteaux to achieve a score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the estate by André Mentzelopoulos in 1977, Château Margaux turned a new page in its history. Raising the Grand Vin of Château Margaux to the highest level, he reintroduced the château's Second Wine, Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, which had been created in 1908. Following in her father's footsteps due to his untimely death, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took up the family banner with energy and passion to maintain Château Margaux's standing as a Bordeaux masterpiece, so recognisable by its neo-Palladian allure. Vintage after vintage, the estate's wines rank among the greatest in the world.
The Château Margaux vineyard owes its distinctive character to its rare and unique terroir, situated on a hillock of gravel. The estate's grape varieties include the area's flagship black grape, Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The estate's clay-limestone soils give birth to legendary vintages, with the refined, sensual allure so representative of the great wines of Margaux.
Apart from a few bouts of frost in January, the winter of 2022 was mild, with below-normal rainfall. The spring of 2022 was a historic one, with extreme temperatures peaking at 40°C in June, making it the hottest spring behind 2011 and 2020. Fortunately, the Bordeaux region received some welcome rain during this period. The summer proved even more extreme, with three intense and prolonged heat waves. These extremes nevertheless produced exceptional harvests, shaping an outstanding vintage.
