Decanter

Intense and concentrated, a fairly powerful take on the vintage, with a better balance of fruit and tannin than I found during En Primeur, but it has not yet fully absorbed its oak flavours. Fairly high acidity levels that emphasise the angular aspect of the tannins. It struggles to deliver a juicy finish, and things are just a little drying.

James Suckling

A vibrant and ripe St.-Émilion with red and dark plums, tobacco and mushrooms, leading to a smooth, juicy and supple palate that offers good drinking early on. Extremely attractive and drinkable now, but better in 2021.

Crushed rocks are the first thing you notice, followed by toasty oak, dark cherry, licorice, flowers and smoke. The wine is full-bodied and delivers ample fresh red fruits, salty ripe tannins and a strong rocky essence through to the finish.

Le Figaro Vin

A fresh, juicy, sapid, elegant wine, with fine tannins and lovely length.

Description

The intensity and precision of a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé

The estate
Having become part of the Beyney family in 1923 and passionately led by Jean-Guy Beyney since 1986, the Grand Cru Classé Château Clos de Sarpe perfectly embodies the nobility of the great terroir of Saint-Émilion on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux region.

The vineyard
The 3.35-hectare vineyard of Château Clos de Sarpe is currently undergoing conversion to organic agriculture. The 65-year-old vines are planted on the famous clay-limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion.

The vintage

2017 will be remembered at Château Clos de Sarpe, as this year marks the vineyard’s official conversion to organic.

Once again praised by critics, Château Clos de Sarpe 2017 was one of the most impressive revelations of this atypical “de vigneron” vintage, confirming its rank among the finest names of the Saint-Émilion appellation. With a vineyard spared by the late-April frost episodes, the vine’s vegetative cycle was able to continue under the best conditions, ensuring optimal ripeness and excellent phenolic potential while retaining beautiful fruit freshness.

Blend

Merlot (85%) and Cabernet Franc (15%).
