Château Canon 2014

Great freshness and elegance, perfect balance, superb fruity length, stylish and inspired.

The 2014 Canon has a very well-defined, precise bouquet with ebullient raspberry and wild strawberry scents infused with minerals. The aromatics here are utterly captivating. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and very well-judged acidity. There is tension and poise to this Saint Emilion, gently fanning out with a delicate spicy finish that lingers long in the mouth. Though surely destined to be over-shadowed by the extraordinary 2015, this Canon deserves a berth in your cellar.

A fresh, pure style, with lots of floral and black tea notes out front, followed by a tightly focused beam of red currant, plum and raspberry coulis flavors. The finish sports a mouthwatering chalky spine and lovely perfume that should develop more with time. For fans of minerality. Best from 2022 through 2032. 6,665 cases made.

Bright rose petals and raspberry notes on the nose. So floral. Supple and alive in the glass, I like the style to this, graceful but with grip to the slightly salty tannins. Does lose a bit of push towards the finish, just tapering slightly leaving gentle red berry fruit, liquorice, graphite and subtle spices lingering.

Intense aromas of minerals, chalk, bright cherries and stones. Full-bodied, tight and silky; very linear. Like a straight shot. Give it three to four years to soften. Vibrant is the word.

On the fresh, bright, mineral-driven side of the style spectrum, with a floral, crushed rock, fennel and cherry core of fruit and spice. Give this at least 5–7 years to come together.

Deep purple, dense at the core, with garnet highlights at the rim. Expansive bouquet with elderberry notes and blackberry jelly, suggesting medium depth. On the palate, incredibly charming. Focuses on elegance. I would have expected more aromatic drive on the finish. But one can still be surprised by this very noble wine as it matures.

An enjoyably melted tannic structure, with the white pepper and saffron lick of limestone, a sappy rise on the finish, with raspberry, redcurrant, crushed roses, generous and creamy through the mid-palate (although you might want to head to the 2009 at this point for an even clearer example of that, as Canon takes time to reach its peak). This has poise and delicacy, and excellent balance. 36 hl/ha yield, 80% new oak, 3.7 pH, harvest September 29 to October 9. The 2014 Canon is deep garnet in color. A little closed and broody to begin, it delivers emerging scents of smoked meats, tapenade, and dusty soil followed by a core of prunes and Morello cherries. The medium to full-bodied palate has a refreshing backbone and chewy tannins supporting the evolved flavors, finishing a little firm and drying.

Although closed, this wine shows great potential, with finely wrapped precision.

The 2014 vintage has produced a Canon that is particularly slender, clear and refined, and in this fresh vintage it finds its direction with ease. The finesse of the tannins and the precision of the aromas are evident.

Floral on the nose, with the lively freshness of summer red berries that invites you to settle onto a picnic blanket in the heart of nature. On the palate, full-bodied yet delicate, like a country woman with a slender waist and generous bosom, it wraps you at the finish in a textured, succulent caress that lingers well after the tasting.

Medium garnet red. The nose of Canon 2014 is nicely expressive, not exactly striking, but it succeeds in highlighting its freshness. The palate mirrors the nose: fresh, fruity, and with good intensity. A beautiful tannic structure emerges on the finish and aligns with the tension, confirming the freshness.

The nose is aromatic and harmonious. It reveals delicate notes of blackberry, black berries and toasted oak, combined with a subtle touch of Zan and a discreet hint of violet. The palate is fruity, mineral, silky, suave, elegant, and offers harmony as well as precision. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of blackberry, blackcurrant and a touch of licorice, combined with a hint of raspberry, a fine minerality and discreet oak. The tannins are fine and supple. Good length.

This wine is starting to find its stride again. Dark color, good intensity, with black highlights. Refined nose with ripe fruit and floral nuances. The palate captivates with the delicacy of its touch and its fleshy substance, without the tannin ever getting in the way. It goes down like a charm and lingers long on the finish. Its tactile refinement makes it suitable to pair with fish (absolutely no lemon, and a red wine sauce is recommended).

89–91. Barrel Sample. This wine is bright and fresh, showing only the lightest of tannins and crisp, zingy acidity. Red currants cut right through the palate giving it levity and suggesting that the wine will develop quickly.
