Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru "Les Vergelesses" 2022
Tasting
Colour
An intense ruby red colour appears in the glass, reflecting the fine ripeness of the grapes during this warm vintage.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with vibrant notes of red fruit, enhanced by subtle floral touches reminiscent of violet. A mineral thread, inherited from the limestone soils, rounds out this ensemble beautifully.
Palate
Combining elegance and power, the palate reveals a well-structured frame with ripe, silky tannins. Fresh red fruit flavours, such as cherry and raspberry, harmonise beautifully with a fine minerality and delicate spicy notes. The finish lingers with remarkable persistence, leaving subtle mineral and herbaceous impressions.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with flavourful meats such as roasted or braised beef, veal in sauce, or lamb. It also enhances feathered game such as duck or pheasant. When it comes to cheese, it pairs perfectly with gruyère, goat's cheese, or a blue cheese.
Service and Storage
While it already offers plenty of charm in its youth, this 2022 vintage boasts excellent aging potential and can be cellared for many years to reveal its full complexity.
The Mineral and Fruity Expression of a Premier Cru from the Côte de Beaune
The Estate
Founded in 1834 by Countess Chandon de Briailles and Pierre Guillemot, the estate has established itself as a benchmark of excellence. Located in the northern part of the Côte de Beaune, the family property is now run by François and Claude de Nicolay. Building on a remarkable historical legacy, the current owners continue a tradition of environmentally respectful craftsmanship. The estate stands out for its fully biodynamic approach to viticulture, notably favouring horse-drawn ploughing to preserve biodiversity and the authentic expression of its terroirs.
The Vineyard
The plots dedicated to this wine lie within the prestigious climat "Les Vergelesses", within the Pernand-Vergelesses appellation. Facing east and located on the mid-slope, the vines benefit from optimal morning sunlight and excellent drainage. This vineyard thrives on clay-limestone soils resting on a limestone-rich subsoil, giving the wine its characteristic mineral signature.
The Vintage
The year 2022 began with a mild, dry winter, followed by early budbreak in April. Despite a few cool nights, the vines quickly resumed their cycle, allowing for an early flowering in excellent conditions at the end of May. The summer was marked by several heatwaves and dry weather, but the vineyard showed remarkable resilience. Timely rainfall in mid-August allowed the grapes to complete their ripening optimally, resulting in a generous and healthy harvest.
Winemaking and Aging
After careful sorting, the wine is vinified with a portion of whole clusters included. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats, using exclusively indigenous yeasts, with carefully controlled temperatures. Gentle gravity-based pump-overs and manual punch-downs are carried out. The wine is then aged in traditional Burgundian barrels, with a small proportion of new oak. The wine rests in historic cellars before bottling.
