Description

Characteristics and tasting notes for Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023

Tasting notes

Colour
With a beautiful pale yellow hue tending towards gold, this wine displays remarkable brilliance and purity.

Nose
The aromatic bouquet opens with notes of fresh citrus, white flowers and a minerality reminiscent of gunflint. With aeration, subtle hints of toasted almond, chalk and light smoky nuances emerge.

Palate
The palate reveals a full-bodied, precisely chiselled structure of great precision, underpinned by vibrant acidity. The whole is marked by a taut freshness in which minerality dominates, leading to a long, saline and particularly persistent finish.

Food and wine pairing

This great white wine pairs wonderfully with fine shellfish such as lobster or langoustine, as well as poultry dishes accompanied by mushrooms. It also enhances foie gras, refined fish in sauce, or hard, aged cheeses such as Comté or Beaufort.

Service and storage

To fully appreciate this Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2023, it is recommended to serve it between 12 and 14°C, decanting for about thirty minutes while still young. This wine, built for ageing, can develop further in the cellar and be enjoyed until around 2041, or even beyond under optimal storage conditions.

The mineral elegance and precision of a great wine from the Corton-Charlemagne appellation

The estate

Officially founded in 2004 following the division of a family inheritance, Domaine Bruno Colin is located at the heart of Chassagne-Montrachet, in Burgundy. Now led by Bruno Colin, supported by his wife Stéphanie, the estate spans 8.75 hectares across several prestigious villages. Descended from a long line of winegrowers, the current owner follows a philosophy centred on sustainable viticulture and deep respect for each terroir. The estate stands out for its commitment to producing wines that are precise, focused and marked by great mineral finesse, reflecting the unique identity of its thirty plots.

The vineyard

The vineyard of the Corton-Charlemagne appellation is rooted in a historic and exceptional terroir located on the upper slopes of the Corton hill, at altitudes ranging from 280 to 330 metres. This vast vineyard benefits from a truly distinctive south-west and north-west exposure. The vines thrive on ancient geological soils dating back to the Jurassic period, composed of clay-rich marls in varying hues, resting on limestone bedrock. Vine management favours mechanical soil work, such as ploughing, to promote optimal aeration and deep rooting.

The vintage

The year 2023 stood out for its historically high temperatures. After a cool April and a moderate spring marked by beneficial rains in June, summer began under cloudier conditions. The end of the season was disrupted by two intense heatwaves between late August and early September. These extreme conditions called for great responsiveness during the harvest in order to preserve the acidity and freshness of the berries while achieving ideal phenolic ripeness.

Winemaking and ageing

Following manual harvesting and rigorous sorting in the vineyard, the grapes undergo pneumatic pressing followed by settling. Fermentation takes place in 228-litre oak barrels, with around 15% new wood. The wine is then aged for twelve months on fine lees, enhancing complexity and texture. Finally, the blend is assembled in stainless steel tanks for a further four to six months of maturation before potential filtration and bottling.
