A elegant and balanced Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero
An exceptional vintage, and the fruit of more than 10 years of research and innovation, Protos' 27 celebrates the 90th anniversary of Bodegas Protos, the emblematic and pioneering winery of the Ribera del Duero region in the Castille-Léon wine region in Spain.
Protos' 27 pays tribute to the black grape variety locally known as "Tinto Fino" that is emblematic of the Ribera del Duero. It is a 100% Tempranillo exceptionally produced by the Bodega Protos from a selection of old vines.
From an exceptional vintage for the Ribera del Duero, Protos' 27 2014 captivates the eye with the depth of its garnet colour and garnet reflections. Intense aromatic expression, complexity and elegance characterize this exceptional Tempranillo with notes of black fruit, vanilla and delicate toasty notes with hints of caramelized coffee. The vintage reveals its generous nature by offering a long finish.
Faithful to the values that make Bodegas Protos so noble, Protos'27 2014 marks the achievement of a great vintage from the Ribera del Duero, which can evolve in bottle over the next few years.
Wine Advocate-Parker :
There is a new red from Tempranillo, the 2014 27, which is the first wine fermented with their own range of indigenous yeasts. For this, they selected fruit from old vines with lower yields and matured the wine for 16 months in brand new oak barrels. Even though, the oak is not completely dominating the wine as was the case with many of its siblings, and there is some fruit juiciness together with the oak tannins. Why so long in new oak? I think this wine (and the others) could be so much better with a more judicious use of (new) wood. 40,000 bottles produced.
