A Red Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Combining Freshness and Concentration in Burgundy
The Estate
Established in the late 2000s, the Au Pied du Mont Chauve estate is located in Burgundy, in the heart of the prestigious Côte de Beaune. Now run by Francine Picard, the property spans approximately 35 hectares across renowned appellations. The estate stands out for its deep commitment to biodynamic viticulture, seeking to express the authenticity of its terroirs with minimal intervention. A true mark of excellence within the Picard family's vineyards, this estate embodies the precision and purity of great Burgundian wines.
The Vineyard
This Saint-Aubin wine comes from a small 0.35-hectare plot planted in the mid-1980s. Ideally located at the start of the slope, between the Montrachet hill and the Chassagne quarry, this terroir rests on soil very rich in limestone, scattered with scree resulting from the erosion of the bedrock. The vineyard is entirely farmed biodynamically, with mechanical soil work and natural grass cover. The vines, pruned using the simple guyot method, benefit from specific biodynamic preparations (horn manure) and natural sprays based on horsetail, nettle, or silica to strengthen the vitality of the plants.
The Vintage
The year 2020 stood out for its great earliness throughout the growing cycle, from spring budbreak to harvest time. Despite sometimes challenging weather conditions, marked in particular by periods of drought, this vintage produced grapes of exceptional quality, offering a wonderfully classic profile.
Winemaking and Aging
For the production of this Saint-Aubin 1er Cru "Pitangerets" 2020, the grapes are harvested by hand in small crates. After careful sorting on a table, the bunches are 100% destemmed. The whole berries are then transferred to temperature-controlled open vats using small stainless-steel carts, in order to avoid any crushing. The winemaking follows the purest Burgundian tradition. Finally, the wine undergoes 15 months of aging, split between 15% new barrels (Burgundian pièces) and 75% 350-liter barrels (half from 2019 and half more than three years old).
