Wine Enthusiast

Anna Lee C. Iijima

Tasted simultaneously with the 2019 Concis des Champs, this 2018 bottling shares a similarly herbaceous, subtly smoky perfume but boasts vibrant redcurrrant and raspberry flavors. Dusty tannins and a crisp, mouthwatering demeanor make it welcoming now but the wine should hold well through 2026 at least.

Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for the Chassagne-Montrachet Village "Concis des Champs" 2018 from Au Pied du Mont Chauve

Tasting

Appearance

The wine displays a medium-intensity ruby red hue.

Nose

The bouquet reveals herbal notes alongside subtly smoky nuances, characteristic of the terroir’s expression.

Palate

On the palate, this wine shows a medium body with a fruity concentration balanced by bright acidity. The structure rests on fine, silky tannins that provide poise without overshadowing the fruit. The finish lingers with persistent red fruit aromas and delicate smoky touches.

Food and wine pairings

This red Chassagne-Montrachet pairs harmoniously with roasted poultry such as duck or goose, as well as feathered game. It also complements, with elegance, dishes featuring wild mushrooms or characterful aged cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

The Chassagne-Montrachet Village "Concis des Champs" 2018 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve favorably until around 2030.

An elegant, mineral Chassagne-Montrachet

The estate

Daughter of one of Burgundy’s greatest winegrowing families, Francine Picard took over in the late 1990s the estate historically run by her father. Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve extends across the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, at the heart of some of the finest climats and terroirs in winegrowing Burgundy.

With a desire to create synergy between the land and the wines, Francine Picard farms her plots in keeping with biodynamic principles, applying with passion and meticulous attention the craft of producing wines that reflect the identity of their terroir.

From a 110-hectare vineyard farmed using “agro-ecology”, the chardonnay and pinot noir of Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve are renowned for their quality, precision and elegance.

Since May 2019, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic viticulture, has joined the team of this illustrious Burgundian estate as Technical Director.

The vineyard

The Climat Concis des Champs lies in the mid-slope part of Chassagne-Montrachet, between the village and the higher-altitude plots. The soils are made up of brown silty clay over a limestone base, enriched with chert and iron nodules that bring minerality and energy to the wines. Vines planted between 1970 and 2010 offer a diversity of vine ages that contributes to the complexity of expression.

The vintage

The year 2018 in Burgundy benefited from abundant winter and spring rainfall that replenished the soils’ water reserves. Flowering took place quickly under ideal conditions. The dry, warm summer was offset by the moisture accumulated in spring. Pinot noir ripening occurred in a compressed window, requiring close monitoring to determine the optimal harvest date and preserve the balance between ripeness and freshness.

Winemaking and aging

The Chassagne-Montrachet Village "Concis des Champs" 2018 was vinified according to the estate’s protocols, with the grapes fully destemmed prior to fermentation in temperature-controlled open-top vats. Aging took place over fifteen months, including twelve months in oak barrels with 30% new oak, allowing for gradual maturation and harmonious integration of the oak.
