Description
Characteristics and Tasting Notes for the Vin de France "Gamine" 2022 by Pierre-Jean Villa
Tasting
Colour
The visual offers an intense red colour, enhanced by highly luminous violet nuances.
Nose
Particularly open and refined, the bouquet immediately releases aromas of crisp red fruits such as raspberry, cherry and blackcurrant. This fruity framework is then enriched with floral notes reminiscent of violet, underlined by a hint of white pepper and light evocations of dark fruit chutney.
Palate
From the very first sip, the palate reveals itself as lively, forthright and full of energy. The wine unfolds a fluid texture, perfectly supported by tannins of great finesse and lovely suppleness. The fruity aromatics express themselves fully, complemented by touches of liquorice and a mineral thread reminiscent of granite, before finishing on a note of elegance and persistence.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs wonderfully with herb-crusted white meats, summer skewers or Mediterranean-inspired dishes such as ratatouille. It will also work beautifully with a porcini risotto, grilled meats without heavy sauces, as well as soft-rind cheeses or fine charcuterie.
Service and storage
Ideally served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C, this "Gamine" 2022 can be fully enjoyed right now, but it will continue to develop its complexity in the cellar and can be enjoyed until around 2027.
The authentic expression of a great Rhône Valley wine
The estate
Founded in 2009 in Chavanay, at the heart of the Rhône Valley, the Pierre-Jean Villa estate now spans around twenty hectares spread across prestigious appellations. After a journey rich in learning, the founder has managed to establish his vineyard among the most essential references in the region. Certified organic since 2021, the estate is currently run by Pierre-Jean Villa himself, supported by his children, Hugo and Pauline. Together, they carry on a philosophy of respect for living organisms, aiming to produce wines that faithfully reflect the identity of their terroirs.
The vineyard
Produced under the Vin de France designation, this wine comes from young vines growing on very steep terroirs, where the slope prevents any mechanisation and demands rigorous manual work. The soils show great geological complexity, combining formations of granite, gneiss and schist.
The vintage
The year 2022 was marked by extremely hot weather and a lack of rainfall for most of the summer season, causing significant water stress. This heat considerably accelerated the vine's cycle, leading to very early harvests that required multiple passes to pick each plot at the right moment.
Winemaking and aging
For the "Gamine" 2022, the winemaking is carried out with minimal intervention. Fermentations occur naturally thanks to indigenous yeasts, while key steps such as racking and bottling follow the lunar cycles. Aging spans a period of twelve to twenty-four months and uses a variety of vessels, including barrels, foudres, demi-muids and sandstone jars.
Grape variety
Syrah (100%).
