Trentin Haut-Adige vineyard is located in the extreme North of Italy, in a mountainous landscape where only a minuscule part of the soils are cultivable. The steep slopes and terraces force the winegrowers to concentrate on their wines quality, rather than the quantity. The two principal areas of production in this region are the DOC Trentino and the DOC Alto Adige. Although those conditions allow a development of scented white wines, almost two third of the production is red wine.

Wine Advocate-Parker : The 2000 San Leonardo comes from a relatively uneventful vintage and displays classic characteristics of the wine, without extreme high or low points. In fact, this vintage will be remembered for its even-keeled nature and abundant fruit generosity. The wine still tastes young, despite its 15 years in the bottle. It opens to plush cherry, blackberry, Indian spice and tobacco. There's a point of strong firmness to the tannins that suggest it needs a few more years in the bottle. Harvest was finished on time by mid-October. By the 2000 vintage, Tenuta San Leonardo had reached its current average production of 95,000 bottles per year.

Wine Advocate-Parker : My feeling is that the 2007 San Leonardo has yet to shows its mettle or true grit. There has been a long-standing competition between the 2006 and 2007 vintages in many parts of Italy including Brunello and Barolo. But the mountainous vineyards of Trentino may actually find a brighter future in 2007 compared to the highly-acclaimed 2006 vintage. I say that because only here do diurnal (night versus daytime temperature shifts) play such a fundamental role in the future development of wine. In Trentino, 2007 was characterized by warner summer temperatures for darker concentration and fresh autumnal nights for developing aromatic intensity. I believe that mountain wines will show greater results down the road in 2007 compared to other parts of Italy.

Wine Advocate-Parker : The 2013 Cuvée Kermesse is equal parts Petit Verdot, Syrah, Lagrein, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. All the grapes used in the blend are harvested on the same day and vinified as one. The only exception is the Cabernet Sauvignon that ripens a bit later than the rest. The wine is aged in French barrique for 18 months. This is an impeccably crafted red that shows seamless and rather surprising balance. It's impossible to make out any of the single grapes used here. The bouquet is fragrant and dark with black fruit, tar, spice and tobacco. The finish shows some bracing acidity in this slightly cooler vintage. Give it a year or two of extra bottle aging.

Wine Advocate-Parker : The 2011 San Leonardo (Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot) is another landmark edition of this celebrated wine. This warm vintage has shaped a slightly more opulent and succulent expression with dark fruit nuances of blackberry and Morello cherry. The bouquet is intense and exuberant. Delicate layers of spice, leather and tobacco give volume at the back. Like most past vintages of San Leonardo, this wine is difficult to taste at such a young age. It is built to last and it would be a horrible shame to pull the cork before the wine has reached its prime. For that, I suggest another ten years of cellar aging (at a minimum).
