An Alto Adige riesling with alpine minerality

The estate

Founded in 1985 by Elena Walch, an architect turned visionary winemaker from Trentin Haut-Adige, this family estate has established itself as a benchmark of the DOC Alto Adige. Based in Termeno along the Wine Route, the estate farms prestigious parcels such as Castel Ringberg, Kastelaz and Minori. Now run by the new generation, notably Karoline Walch, Elena Walch stands out for its innovative vision of single-vineyard wines and its respect for the environment. The estate produces gewürztraminer, lagrein, pinot bianco and riesling, elegantly showcasing the alpine typicity of South Tyrolean terroirs.

The vineyard

The Castel Ringberg vineyard rises between 330 and 400 meters above sea level, climbing from the shores of Lake Caldaro to the Mendel ridge. The soils are made up of glacial Adige gravels, limestone soils over morainic subsoil, and crumbly limestone. The climate benefits from the lake’s moderating influence as well as the vigorous afternoon southerly wind known as the "Ora". These distinctive conditions of Alto Adige promote the expression of riesling.

The vintage

The year 2022 in Trentin Haut-Adige began with a warm spring that encouraged early flowering. Mid-summer proved dry and hot. These conditions made it possible to harvest grapes in exceptional health and at very fine ripeness. The vintage is marked by balanced acidity, great complexity and remarkable structure.

Winemaking and aging

The Riesling Vigna "Castel Ringberg" 2022 harvest at Elena Walch was carried out entirely by hand in late August. After gentle pressing, the musts were clarified by static settling. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 18°C. The wine then spent extended time on fine lees after fermentation, before being bottled the following spring.

Grape variety

This Italian white wine is 100% riesling.
