Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Echezeaux Grand cru "Les Rouges du Bas" Domaine 2022 by Méo-Camuzet
Tasting
Appearance
The wine shows a deep garnet-red hue, vivid and intense, with the reflections typical of the great wines of the Côte de Nuits.
Nose
Remarkably complex, the aromatic bouquet blends notes of candied black fruit, fresh cherry and crushed strawberry with delicate floral hints of rose. The whole is enhanced by touches of spice and game, along with nuances of forest floor and crème fraîche.
Palate
The palate reveals an imposing structure, perfectly balanced by pronounced acidity and lovely freshness. With a deep, mouth-filling texture, this palate, at once round and saline, unfolds with great delicacy, leading to a long, supple finish that never turns heavy.
Food and wine pairings
This great red wine pairs wonderfully with finely prepared meats, whether roasted or served in a sauce, such as beef, lamb or duck. It also enhances large game, such as venison or hare à la royale, as well as poultry in a mushroom sauce. For a bolder pairing, it will accompany full-flavoured white fish with firm flesh, or a platter of firm, washed-rind cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
To fully enjoy its aromatic palette, we recommend serving this wine at a temperature between 16 and 17°C. Decanting is recommended in its youth. Built to age, this Echezeaux Grand cru "Les Rouges du Bas" Domaine 2022 can be enjoyed from 2027 and will continue to evolve favourably until around 2042.
The pure and elegant expression of a high-altitude terroir in Burgundy
The estate
In Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Méo-Camuzet takes its name from Étienne Camuzet, who acquired vines in Clos de Vougeot in 1920. In 1959, Jean Méo took over the running of the estate and continued its story. The first vintage under the Méo-Camuzet label was produced in 1983. Today, the estate cultivates prestigious climats of the Côte de Nuits, including Richebourg, Échézeaux and Cros Parantoux. Its Pinot Noirs are elegant and profound, expressing all the finesse of the Burgundian terroir.
The vineyard
This wine comes from a specific 0.44-hectare plot named "Les Rouges du Bas", located at the upper limit of the vast Echezeaux appellation. This elevated position gives the vines a cooler climate, encouraging slow ripening of the berries. Resting on deep soils dating from the Jurassic period, made up of Bajocian marls, red alluvium and gravel, this terroir imparts a distinctive minerality and aromatic freshness. The vineyard is managed using sustainable practices close to organic farming, including soil ploughing and rigorous yield control through green harvesting.
The vintage
The 2022 year was marked by an early season and particularly warm temperatures. These very favourable weather conditions allowed the vegetative cycle to develop optimally, resulting in a generous harvest that was nonetheless perfectly managed in the face of climatic challenges.
Vinification and ageing
The production of this Echezeaux Grand cru "Les Rouges du Bas" Domaine 2022 begins with full destemming of the grapes, followed by a cold maceration lasting a few days. Fermentation starts naturally in concrete tanks, with precise temperature control to preserve freshness. Extraction is gentle, with light punch-downs at the end of the cycle. The wine is then aged for approximately 17 months in French oak barrels, with a balanced proportion of new wood. Bottling is carried out by gravity, without any fining or filtration, in order to respect the living material.
Grape variety
100% Pinot Noir.
