Decanter

Medicinal herbs and dark fruits — forward and nuanced on the nose with a soft, perfumed element too. A gourmet style with bright acidity and a saline tang. There’s focus, freshness and underlying power. A serious wine with full body, minty freshness and structure. Plush, succulent, perhaps not overly complex, but it really delivers for the price and will age. Firm, grippy finish. Snap this up!

Aromas of currants and dark cherries with an orange peel character. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and chocolate, with hints of cedar. Crisp and vivid. 66% merlot, 24% cabernet sauvignon and 10% petit verdot. Drink or hold.

Falstaff

Deep ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, faint brightening on the rim. Fresh wild berries, blackberry, blueberry and cassis, delicate herbal savoriness, tobacco nuances. Medium body, red berry fruit, freshly structured, ripe tannins, salty finish, versatile food wine.

Readers looking for a great Bordeaux that won't break the bank need to jump on the 2020 Madame De Beaucaillou. First made in 2018 and all hand-harvested (and optically sorted), it has bright, darker cherry and subtle cassis-like fruits as well as some loamy earth and violet nuances, medium body, a round, supple mouthfeel, and outstanding length. I'd happily drink a bottle any time over the coming 7-8 years or so.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2020 Madame de Beaucaillou is a blend of 66% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it flies out of the glass with notes of preserved red and black cherries, spice cake, and graphite with a touch of lavender. The medium-bodied palate is soft, open, and ready to drink with a fruity finish.

Le Figaro Vin

On the nose, pure blue fruits with a touch of tobacco. Superb mouthfeel, very elegant, with a lovely body. Aromas of spices and dark chocolate. The wine leads you, with a firm hand, to the generous finish.

Yves Beck

An inviting bouquet with spicy and fruity notes. A gourmand, juicy attack. The wine is well supported by its structure and tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. It is slender, balanced, and can be enjoyed in its youth.

Description

All of the breadth and depth of a Haut-Médoc wine unveiled by Ducru Beaucaillou

The estate

An icon of the left bank, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is undoubtedly one of the greatest names in the Bordeaux region. The 2nd Cru Classé in the Official Classification of 1855 embodies the perfect model of a great Saint-Julien. Acquired by the Borie family in 1941, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou takes its name from its extraordinary terroir. Under the leadership of the determined and talented Bruno Borie, Ducru-Beaucaillou has become one of the greatest wines of Saint-Julien.

The vineyard

The Château Ducru-Beaucaillou vineyard is situated along the river and planted in soils of gravel dating from the Günz Ice Age. Located near the Gironde estuary, the vines enjoy an exceptional microclimate and the river, which acts as a thermoregulator, to produce this Haut-Médoc wine.

Blend

Merlot (66%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (24%)
Petit Verdot (10%).

Ageing

After the harvests and a bespoke winemaking process, the wine ages for 12 months in Bordeaux barrels, 20% of which are new wood and 80% barrels of one previous wine. During the first 6 months, topping-up occurs regularly and racking takes place every two to three months, with four in total.
