Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Crozes-Ermitage "Les Varonniers" 2025 from M. Chapoutier

Appearance

With its deep, intense black color, the wine displays a fine concentration.

Nose

The nose opens with aromas of ripe fruit, dominated by black cherry and blackberry, accompanied by notes of black olive. Floral hints of peony and vegetal touches reminiscent of bramble leaf bring complexity and finesse to the whole.

Palate

The attack is silky, supported by fine, elegantly integrated tannins. The palate charms with its freshness and balance, developing an aromatic palette centered on red fruit coulis, enhanced by sweet spices and subtle mineral notes of warm stones.

A silky Crozes-Ermitage wine of great delicacyThe estate

The estate
Founded in 1808, Maison M. Chapoutier is a leading reference of the Rhône Valley. Under the impetus of Michel Chapoutier in the 1990s, the estate established itself as a pioneer of biodynamics, highlighting the expression of terroir. Today, his children, Mathilde and Maxime Chapoutier, oversee the management of a vineyard spanning more than 345 hectares. Renowned for its Braille labels and its motto "Fac et spera", the house combines environmental respect and innovation to craft authentic wines.

The vineyard

From the Crozes-Ermitage appellation, this cuvée comes from a selection of plots located at the foot of the granitic hillside of Hermitage, in the lieu-dit Varogne. This singular terroir benefits from a cooler microclimate, with shaded mornings and sunny afternoons. The soils offer a natural transition between pure granite at higher altitudes and alluvial deposits below, creating ideal conditions for the vine.

The vintage

A vintage beginning with a rather mild and very rainy winter, building up good water reserves, followed by a prolonged cold spell delaying budburst and reducing the risk of frost. Spring, alternating between rain and sunshine, led to strong vegetative growth and increased pressure on the vine, with early flowering but few grape clusters. The summer was marked by two heatwaves and a hail episode in Crozes-Hermitage, causing some losses. The harvest, early from mid-August, was spread out thanks to late-August rains that refined ripeness levels.

Winemaking and aging

The grapes are harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness. For the "Les Varonniers" cuvée, winemaking favors lower fermentation temperatures and a shorter maceration of around three weeks. This choice, combined with a restrained use of oak, preserves the purity and precision of the fruit.
