Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Densely packed, with dark plum, currant paste and macerated fig fruit, offset by a zesty edge. Briary tannins stride along with the copious fruit, revealing lots of spice and bramble notes on the finish. Very dense for the vintage. Best from 2016 through 2030. 32 cases imported.

Decanter

The aromas lean towards baked plums and rich dried fruit, with a clear stony, mineral seam. It’s still tightly wound, the tannins standing firm despite their fine, silky nature.

Vinous

Josh Raynolds

Inky ruby. Exotic, intensely perfumed scents of raspberry liqueur, floral pastilles and Asian spices, with subtle black pepper and mineral qualities emerging with aeration. Juicy, focused and pure, offering vibrant red fruit and spicecake flavors and showing impressive tension and back-end power. Clings on the finish with excellent persistence, silky tannins and an echo of exotic spices. This suave wine is surprisingly showy right now but Pierre-Henri Morel said that that was "a deception, because this one will probably age the longest of all the Ermitage cuvees parcellaires."

Falstaff

Falstaff

From 90 to 100 year old Syrah vines: strong crimson garnet, broader ochre rim lightening. Delicately smoky underlaid black forest berry fruit, a hint of liquorice, some juniper, discreet wood savouriness, dark minerality, very complex and inviting. Juicy, complex, fresh sweet cherry, fine sweetness, silky woven, supporting tannins, damp stones on the finish, great length, taut and drying, immensely youthful, almost a touch too young to show it all yet. (2025 - 2075).

Bettane+Desseauve

The most full-bodied of the 2011s, with tannins showing characteristic graphite notes; tremendous character, but it needs time. It still won’t match the 2010, whose majestic structure is out of reach.

Description

A rich and aromatic Ermitage red wine

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of Maison Chapoutier are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 ratings awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Pavillon 2011 from M. Chapoutier is an Ermitage wine made from a plot of about 4 hectares that owes its uniqueness to its atypical geology consisting of a thin layer of sediments resting on a granite subsoil. The grapes produced from this vineyard of old vines, averaging 65 years old, are recognized for their high quality.

Vinification and aging

Ensuring a low yield, these old vines are harvested manually, at the limit of overripeness. 100% destemming then vinification in concrete vats accompanied by one to two punch-downs per day to ensure optimal extraction. Maceration of 4 to 5 weeks.

Made exclusively from a free-run wine, this single-vineyard cuvée benefits from an aging of 18 to 20 months in oak barrels (including on average 30% new barrels). The clarification is natural.

Blend

Syrah (100%).
