Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

The 1999 Ermitage l'Ermite is a wine that borders on perfection compared to its backward performance last year from barrel. Sadly, there are usually 500-600 cases of the cuvée, but in 1999 only 400 were produced. It comes from Chapoutier's oldest vines (most over 100 years of age), and represents the essence of both Hermitage and Syrah. From bottle, the 1999 l'Ermite reveals an old-style Lafleur character in its kirsch liqueur intermixed with raspberries, blackberries, and striking minerality. It has put on considerable weight since last year, but is essentially an elegant, ethereal effort with incredible intensity as well as amazing lightness. It is a phenomenal expression of terroir. However, be forewarned, anyone expecting to derive a lot of pleasure from this before another fifteen years elapse will be disappointed. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2060. With respect to Chapoutier's red wines, 2000 was a very fine vintage. Interestingly, this offering revealed more fat and flesh than many of his northern Rhône peers. Wine Spectator

Sensational terroir wine. It packs in the chalky mineral character of the Hermitage soil and offers intense fruit flavors. Despite the massive tannins, this concentrated, full-bodied red seems silky on the lingering finish. Drink now through 2020. 500 cases made.

Jean-Marc Quarin

Jean-Marc Quarin

Dark red color. Intense. Beautiful. Lively. Intense nose. Fruity. Creamy. Powerful. A touch of oxidation. Here, the wine is very straightforward and immediately shows roundness and richness on the palate, whereas I was hoping for more structure. Juicy, rich, and flavorful, I’m missing texture in the middle. The finish is enveloped, aromatic, and pleasant, with notes of licorice, flowers, and fruit. And that wine that’s missing in the mid-palate comes back very strongly on the back end. It’s long and built for long aging.

Description

The delicacy and elegance of a red wine from the Rhône Valley

The property

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House embodies today the elite of the greatest names in the Rhône Valley.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. Maison Chapoutier's wines are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by the American Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

L’Ermite 1999 from M. Chapoutier is an Ermitage wine from a vineyard certified in biodynamics since 1991. Located at the top of the Hermitage hill, around the chapel at the place called l’Ermite, this great Rhône Valley terroir is composed of leached brown soils, sandy, shallow, derived from Tournon granite. Some old vines aged 120 years are planted on very poor granite soils.

Vinification and aging

Late manual harvest to reach optimal phenolic maturity. 100% destemming. Vinification in concrete vat. Maceration of 4 weeks to develop the silky touch of the tannins. Exclusive use of free-run wine in the making of this wine. The aging is carried out in new barrels and one-year-old barrels for an aging of about 8 to 20 months.

Blend

Syrah (100%).
