Robert Parker

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Chapoutier's Ermitage l'Ermite possesses a transparent character that almost allows the taster to see through the wine's multiple levels. What stands out is the liqueur of granite liquid minerality. The elegant 1998 Ermitage l'Ermite rouge is light, but exquisitely balanced, with subtle notes of smoke and black currants. The flavors unfold gently and gracefully, with nothing overstated. The power is restrained, the tannin is well-integrated, and the acidity is barely noticeable. However, the wine is fresh and beautifully delineated. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040. Importer: Paterno Imports, Lake Bluff, IL; tel. (847) 604-89000

Healthy crimson. Broad panoply of flavours. Very sweet at first then pinched and tart on the palate. No opulence or grandeur. (JR)

Medium ruby-red. High-toned aromas of raspberry, fresh herbs, tobacco, saddle leather, roasted meat and clove. Quite tough and dry in the mouth, with a distinct greenness. Finishes with tough, peppery tannins and a suggestion of wet wood, as if from improperly cured barrels. I find this wine as raw as it appeared from barrel a year ago. Not recommended.

With 2 hours of double decanting under its belt, everything was in play. The wine is thick, rich, plush and polished, with layers of sweet, perfectly ripe dark berries, licorice, stone and earthy notes. The wine is long and fresh. The wine was even better with another hour or two in the glass.

Dark red color. Lively. Beautiful. Intense. Nose of medium intensity. Fine. Fruity. Smoky. Toasty. Superb scent of evolution and reduction. At once sooty, cherry and mineral. Very beautiful entry on the palate, smooth and silky, developing on a fine, fruity mouthfeel. Slow, complex and flavorful tannic evolution on a fine grain and a very, very aromatic profile, where flowers, fruits and spices mingle with great freshness. It’s very long on fine-grained texture and very good! Irresistible charm that has nothing to envy when compared to the concentration of ’99.

Description

A spicy and silky red wine from the Rhône Valley

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the Rhône Valley.

Winemaker and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. Maison Chapoutier's wines are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by the American Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

L’Ermite 1998 from M. Chapoutier is an exceptional Ermitage wine from a vineyard certified in biodynamics since 1991. Located at the top of the Hermitage hill, around the chapel at the place called l’Ermite, this great Rhône Valley terroir is composed of leached brown soils, sandy, shallow, derived from Tournon granite. Some old vines aged 120 years are planted on very poor granite terroirs. In a constant search for excellence, a significant part of the vines is pre-phylloxera or replaced by layering (therefore rootstock-free, i.e. without rootstock).

Vinification and aging

Late manual harvest to reach optimal phenolic maturity. 100% destemming. Vinification in concrete vat. Maceration of 4 weeks to develop the silky touch of the tannins. Exclusive use of free-run wine in the making of this wine. The aging is carried out in new barrels and one-year-old barrels for an aging of about 8 to 20 months.
