All Grenache from a classic clay-and-galets site on the eastern side of the appellation, Chapoutier's 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Croix de Bois is a bigger, more rugged expression of Grenache than the more elegant Barbe Rac. Bold black cherry and licorice notes lead the way in this full-bodied, rich, velvety wine that should drink well for at least a decade.

Rumbles with dark currant and cherry fruit steeped with licorice root, bay leaf and chestnut accents, this also has a solid strip of dark earth and warm paving stone running underneath. Exudes both a perfumy edge and an old-school feel. One for the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2034. 10 cases imported.

Decanter

Appealing roasted notes beneath blackberries, red plums and a few floral elements. Soft and approachable on the palate, open and broad, rounded and warming.

A very classic meaty, warm and spicy Châteauneuf with a wonderful balance of richness and fine-grained tannin that is comforting and embracing. Lovely, creamy finish with many savory and earthy nuances. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

Full-bodied, elegant, rich and forward, the wine is silky, fresh and pure, with layers of sweet, ripe kirsch, cherries, flowers and a peppery, vibrant finish. You only need to give it just a few years to come around before it begins to show its stuff. Drink from 2024 - 2037

The 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Croix de Bois comes from a single vineyard near the town of Bédarrides and, as with the Barbe Rac, is 100% destemmed Grenache aged in concrete tanks. While I ordinarily prefer Barbe Rac in terms of quality, this cuvée, which comes from cooler, more clay-rich soils, offers a touch more purity and precision in 2019. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and nicely focused on the palate, it has incredibly Provençal notes of red and black fruits, peppery garrigue, saddle leather, and chalky minerality. It’s also perfectly balanced. I’d happily drink a bottle today, but a few years in the cellar will do it well, and it will certainly evolve for two decades.

Bettane+Desseauve

Fresher and more elegant in its fruit, orange peel rather than red fruit jam; you can sense a cooler terroir. A lovely mineral grip on the palate that makes you salivate and adds freshness. The power is better controlled than in Barbe-Rac.

La RVF

In a register of dark fruits (blackcurrant) and cocoa, its texture is powdery, and it shows a very fine, well-balanced length.

Description

A fruity and delicate red wine from Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House embodies today the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Vinegrower and merchant, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of the Chapoutier House are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Croix de Bois cuvée from M. Chapoutier is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine made from vines planted on a soil typical of the appellation, composed of large rolled quartzite pebbles with sandy red clay. The vineyard is certified in biodynamics and organic farming.

The vintage

This 2019 vintage is marked by climatic excesses, sometimes violent. After a mild and dry winter, spring gives way to a unleashing of the elements (frost episode in April, storm, hailstorm in May) which weaken the vine without preventing a beautiful flowering in early June. The summer period also brings its share of bad weather. Hail hits some plots in mid-June and a heatwave spreads over the Rhône valley favoring the appearance of a fire that destroys 1.5 hectares of vines. The month of July sees a new storm that does little damage. Finally, in early August, the milder weather allows to catch up with the delay in the vegetative cycle and the vine continues its growth. The harvest, early and fast to fight against the heatwave, begins in early September and ends on October 1st in the south on Châteauneuf-du-Pape with Barbe Rac. This extraordinary season shapes a vintage, with an exceptional tannic structure, preserved by the winemakers from all climatic excesses.

Vinification and aging

The grapes undergo a first rigorous sorting during the harvest. Vinification in closed concrete vats. Maceration for 3 weeks. Exclusive use of the runoff wine. Aging in vats for a period of 14 to 16 months.
