James Suckling

A 100% Grenache showing class, structure and intensity. On the nose it develops aromas of sweet cherries, candied oranges and wild herbs. Full-bodied with fine, chalky tannins, it’s driven and vivid with a well-structured mid-palate. Elegant and intense at the same time with a long, peppery and energetic finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink from 2027.

100% Grenache. Vinified and aged for 16 months in concrete tanks. Certified organic and biodynamic. Tank sample. Tasted blind. Crushed raspberry and damson on the nose. A sweet, ripe attack is followed by fine, firm and detailed tannins. There’s an earthy mineral note along with black tea, smoke and dark fruits on the palate. A lot going on here, showing a beautiful interplay between salty and sweet. Layered, taut finish. (AC)

Pristine licorice, black cherry compote, wild strawberry jam and blood orange introduce the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe-Rac. Powerful and concentrated, the 2022 is game-on. Offering sweet-tasting fruit on the full-bodied palate, this is a standout red Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Chapoutier that is well worth seeking out.

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac is a ripe, sexy, beastly Grenache with loads of mulled strawberry and black-raspberry-like fruit supported by peppery herbs, garrigue, savory flowers, and spicy nuances. This medium- to full-bodied, mouth-filling red has fine tannins and a great finish. It will evolve gracefully over the coming 15 years or more. As always, the 2022 is all Grenache from the Barbe d’Asne lieu-dit, 70% destemmed and raised entirely in concrete tanks.

Starts off pretty, fresh, juicy and inviting, then a salty, mineral concentration builds, with a beautifully textured core of cherry liqueur, plum and incense framed by forest floor, incense, grilled apple wood and fresh tobacco. Hints of warm mocha, coffee and baking spices add richness, but it stays balanced, with lift and grace — and very polished tannins. A gorgeous red. Drink now through 2038. 30 cases imported.

Description

The richness and balance of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine

The estate

Established since 1808 in Tain-L’Hermitage, the M. Chapoutier House today embodies the elite of the greatest names in the wines of the Rhône Valley.

Vine grower and trader, Michel Chapoutier has managed over the vintages to lead this family business to the top. The wines of the Chapoutier House are recognized for their refinement and high quality by the finest connoisseurs beyond borders. A man of many hats, Michel Chapoutier holds the world record for 100/100 scores awarded by American critic Robert Parker. Mathilde, Michel Chapoutier's daughter, has taken up the torch of this iconic house, overseeing a vineyard of over 350 hectares across the most prestigious appellations of the northern and southern Rhône Valley.

The vineyard

The Barbe Rac cuvée from M. Chapoutier is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine resulting from a rigorous parcel selection. Averaging 90 years old, the vines are planted on a plot with complex geology, composed on the surface of rolled pebbles from the former bed of the Rhône. The vineyard is certified in biodynamics and organic farming.

Vinification and aging

The grapes undergo a first rigorous sorting during the harvest. Vinification in closed concrete vats. Maceration for about 3 weeks at a temperature between 30 and 33°C. Exclusive use of the runoff wine. Aging in vats for a period of 16 months.
