Robert Parker

William Kelley

The 2015 Echezeaux Grand Cru opens in the glass with a bouquet of cassis and plums, generously framed by spicy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and fine-grained, with the atypical concentration and depth at the core so characteristic of the 2015 vintage, and a surprisingly bright line of acidity that verges on tartness and accordingly lowers my score. Since Echezeaux normally produces some of the highest-pH musts of all the Côte de Nuits grands crus, I wonder if this was simply overzealously acidified in this warm vintage? There are good raw materials here, and I suspect time will be kind to the wine, but it is a bit angular and disjointed out of the gates.

Decanter

Voluptuous and fragrant cherry-led red fruit nose. Sleek attack, with all the silkiness of Echézeaux at its best; this is lifted, pure and well defined. Really stylish and beautifully balanced, with admirable length.

A velvety and luscious red Grand Cru from Bourgogne

The estate

Founded in 1797 by the Latour family, this Burgundian estate has remained independent and family-owned for more than two centuries. Historically established in Aloxe-Corton in Côte de Beaune, Louis Latour is today the largest Grands Crus estate in the Côte d'Or. The estate is still managed by the Latour family, continuing the tradition of passing down the name Louis from generation to generation, showcasing an ancestral expertise that combines cooperage and exceptional Burgundian viticulture.

The vineyard

This Echézeaux comes from a superb parcel located above the Clos Vougeot, between Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot in the Côte de Nuits. Formerly the property of the Abbaye de Cîteaux, this terroir features diversified and complex soils composed of clay, limestone and gravel, with an east-facing exposure. The vines, averaging 40 years old, produce a controlled yield of 35 hectoliters per hectare, hand-harvested to preserve the quality of the grapes.

Winemaking and aging

Traditional winemaking is carried out in open vats with full malolactic fermentation. The aging takes place over 10 to 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels from the Louis Latour cooperage with medium toast, giving the wine its harmonious structure and great aging potential.

Grape variety

100% Pinot Noir.
