Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Louis Latour’s Echézeaux Grand Cru 2017

Tasting

Appearance
Deep ruby color with garnet highlights, intense and luminous.

Nose
Delicate nose combining black cherry, licorice, cinnamon, and forest floor.

Palate
Very expansive on the palate, with aromas of cherry, licorice, and roasted coffee. Silky tannins, great freshness, and a very long, persistent finish.

Food and wine pairing

This Grand Cru pairs perfectly with roasted leg of lamb, ribeye steak, game, or aged cheeses.

Serving and cellaring

Ideally served at 16 to 17°C (61–63°F), this wine can age in the cellar until around 2031.

A generous, lively red Grand Cru from Burgundy

The estate

Created in 1797 by the Latour family, this Burgundian estate has remained independent and family-owned for over two centuries. Historically established in Aloxe-Corton in the Côte de Beaune, Louis Latour is today the largest owner of Grands Crus in the Côte d'Or. The estate continues to be run by the Latour family, perpetuating the tradition of passing down the first name Louis from generation to generation, reflecting ancestral savoir-faire that combines cooperage and exceptional Burgundian viticulture.

The vineyard

This Echézeaux comes from a superb parcel located above Clos Vougeot, between Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot in the Côte de Nuits. Formerly owned by the Abbey of Cîteaux, this terroir features diverse, complex soils composed of clay, limestone, and gravel, with an east-facing exposure. The vines average 40 years of age and produce a controlled yield of 35 hectoliters per hectare, with hand harvesting to preserve grape quality.

Winemaking and aging

Traditional vinification takes place in open vats with full malolactic fermentation. Aging lasts 10 to 12 months in 100% new French oak barrels from the Louis Latour cooperage with a medium toast, giving the wine its harmonious structure and great aging potential.
