Description
Characteristics and tasting advice for Clos Beatus Ille 2021 from Famille Isabel Ferrando
Tasting
Color
The color reveals a bright ruby red hue.
Nose
The nose opens with intense aromas of fresh red fruits, notably strawberry and raspberry. Floral notes and a touch of white pepper complete this indulgent, energetic bouquet.
Palate
On the palate, the wine is juicy and supple, offering flavors of raspberry and cherry. A refreshing note of blood orange brings structure and balances the generosity of the fruit. Silky, fine tannins gradually unfold, creating an elegant texture. The finish lingers with smooth notes of lavender that persist pleasantly.
Food and wine pairings
This Côtes du Rhône pairs perfectly with red meats and cheeses. It also matches beautifully with herb-driven Mediterranean dishes, grilled lamb, or aged goat cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
Clos Beatus Ille 2021 can be enjoyed now to appreciate its freshness and vibrant fruit.
A fresh, indulgent Côtes du Rhône from the Rhône Valley
The estate
Located south of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Rhône Valley, the Domaine Famille Isabel Ferrando was known as Domaine Saint Préfert until 2020.
Founded in 1920, Domaine Saint Préfert has been taken over since 2003 by Isabel Ferrando. Passionate about her terroir, this former senior banking executive turned winemaker carries out, among other things, a rigorous massal selection of the estate’s grape varieties.
In 2019, Isabel Ferrando stopped production of her three existing cuvées to return to a single blended wine in red and white, then in 2020 renamed the estate Famille Isabel Ferrando.
From a vineyard farmed organically and biodynamically, the exceptional wines of this Rhône Valley estate are recognized by many international critics for their power and remarkable natural acidity.
The vineyard
Clos Beatus Ille comes from two plots located in the district of Sorgues, on the southern boundary of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and in Vedène. These Côtes du Rhône terroirs are characterized by soils made up of rolled pebbles, blue clay, and sands. This geological diversity gives the wine freshness and complexity. The vines, farmed under certified biodynamic viticulture, receive meticulous attention throughout the growing cycle.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage proved particularly challenging in the Rhône Valley. Following a spring frost in April, the season was marked by significant humidity and irregular temperatures. Winegrowers had to contend with threats of downy mildew and black rot. Despite these challenges, rigorous producers achieved wines of exceptional quality, characterized by remarkable freshness and moderate yields. The harvest, carried out around two weeks later than in 2020, required careful selection of the grapes.
Vinification and aging
Clos Beatus Ille 2021 is fully destemmed and then vinified in concrete tanks. This method preserves the freshness of the fruit and the wine’s mineral precision. Aging also takes place in concrete tanks, encouraging a pure expression of terroir with no oak influence. This minimalist approach reflects the estate’s philosophy, which favors authenticity and elegance.
Grape varieties
Grenache (around 85%), Cinsault (around 15%), complemented by a small proportion of Syrah.
