Characteristics and Tasting Notes of the Gewurztraminer Grand Cru "Hengst" 2023 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
Tasting
Colour
This white wine reveals a pale golden-yellow hue with beautiful brightness, showing no amber notes whatsoever.
Nose
The bouquet is complex and restrained. It releases aromas of spices, pepper, aniseed and oregano, accompanied by subtle floral and fruity touches.
Palate
The palate offers lovely concentration, underpinned by a precise mineral and saline backbone. Noble tannins bring freshness and remarkable length, ending on a velvety finish.
Food and wine pairing
The estate suggests pairing this wine with caramelised tomatoes with star anise and burrata, or subtly spiced shellfish such as shrimp in a honey, chilli and lavender crust. It also pairs beautifully with duck, rosemary-glazed pork ribs, or Asian and oriental dishes with moderate spicing.

The mineral precision of an Alsace wine crafted by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht
The estate
Officially founded in 1959 following the marriage of Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht carries on a family winemaking lineage dating back to 1620. Located in Alsace, the estate spans 40 hectares across several terroirs. Today, the domaine is run by Olivier Humbrecht, alongside his son Pierre-Émile. A pioneer in the region, the vineyard is fully cultivated using biodynamic methods, reflecting a strong commitment to letting the authenticity of each terroir shine through.
The vineyard
The Gewurztraminer Grand Cru "Hengst" 2023 comes from a 1.4-hectare plot located in the commune of Wintzenheim, in Alsace. Facing south-east, at an altitude ranging from 270 to 360 metres, the vines benefit from a dry microclimate. With an average age of 72 years, they take deep root in marl-limestone soils dating from the Oligocene, particularly rich in iron. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, with manual labour and horse ploughing to preserve the soil structure.
The vintage
The year 2023 began with a cool spring. Flowering, at the end of June, was marked by an intense heatwave reaching 38°C. Welcome rainfall in August then allowed the vines to regain their balance, resulting in healthy grapes at harvest time.
Winemaking and aging
The Gewurztraminer Grand Cru "Hengst" 2023 is vinified using indigenous yeasts. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, followed by twelve months of aging in large wooden foudres. Bottling takes place after extended contact with the lees.
