Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Riesling Grand Cru "Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann" 2024 from Domaine Zind-Humbrecht

Tasting notes

Appearance

The wine reveals a bright pale yellow hue with luminous highlights.

Nose

The nose asserts itself with striking power, commanding the taster's full attention. The volcanic intensity that emerges is remarkably rare, almost unsettling, offering a bouquet of a complexity so extreme it is difficult to grasp.

Palate

The palate unfolds with an energy that compels admiration. Everything comes together in admirable balance: power, length, intensity, harmony and saline acidity combine with a precision and coherence that reflect the greatness of this terroir.

The refinement and finesse of an Alsace Grand Cru

The estate
Located in the Haut-Rhin, in Alsace, Domaine Zind-Humbrecht is world-renowned as one of the 3 "great estates of Alsace." The Humbrecht family has been making wine since 1620, but in 1959, following the marriage of Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind, the estate was renamed Zind-Humbrecht. Since 2009, the property has been run by their son, Olivier, who was the first French "Master of Wine" and is regarded as one of the finest winemakers in the world. A pioneer in producing Alsace wines with a concentrated and fruity character through low yields, the estate's viticulture is now governed by the principles of biodynamics.

The vineyard
The family owns 40 hectares of vines planted on a variety of terroirs where ten distinct soil types can be identified. Typical Alsace wines flourish on these lands, which allow them to produce the finest cuvées. The estate has been certified organic since 1998 and biodynamic since 2002. Most of the plots are planted within areas classified as Grand Cru.

The wine
The Grand Cru Rangen, located in the south of Alsace on the heights of Thann, is a late-ripening volcanic terroir with steep, south-facing slopes. Its soil, formed from the decomposition of volcanic ash, produces clays with remarkable mineral-fixing capacities, giving the wines a profoundly original character. Particularly low yields in 2024 contribute to the exceptional intensity and concentration of the wines from this vintage, produced from vines with an average age of 62 years.
