Description
Characteristics and tasting notes of the Marsannay Village "Clos du Roy" 2022 Domaine Sylvain Pataille
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour reveals a vivid, deep violet hue, reflecting the fruit's fine maturity.
Nose
Particularly well-defined, the aromatic bouquet opens with notes of black cherry and wild strawberry. With aeration, it reveals a lovely mineral and saline complexity, complemented by delicate floral touches of iris, violet and dried rose, along with subtle smoky nuances.
Palate
Medium-bodied, the palate offers a dense, concentrated texture, supported by tannins of great finesse. Flavours of blackcurrant and dark fruits intertwine with savoury notes. The whole is carried by lovely tension and remarkable freshness, leading to a long, elegant and finely chiselled finish, marked by a mineral imprint reminiscent of stone.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine from France pairs beautifully with red meats such as grilled steak or braised beef, as well as roasted meats like lamb or game (venison, wild boar). It will also enhance traditional sauce-based dishes such as coq au vin, roasted poultry, and earthy root vegetables and mushrooms. As for cheese, it pairs perfectly with aged pressed cow's milk cheeses.
Service and storage
To fully appreciate this Marsannay Village "Clos du Roy" 2022, it is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 15 and 16°C. Decanting for thirty minutes to an hour before serving is advised to release its full aromatic complexity. Built for aging, this wine can be cellared and enjoyed until around 2050.
The mineral expression of a great Burgundy terroir
The estate
Founded in 1999 with just one hectare of vines, Domaine Sylvain Pataille has become a leading reference in Burgundy. Located in Marsannay, the estate now spans approximately 17.5 hectares. Sylvain Pataille, joined by his brother Laurent in 2008, currently runs the estate. Both trained oenologists, they stand out for their respectful approach to living soils and their commitment to showcasing the historic terroirs of their appellation. The estate is particularly renowned for its meticulous work and its ability to elevate its wines to the pinnacle of regional quality.
The vineyard
Located in the commune of Chenôve, north of Marsannay, the "Clos du Roy" climat benefits from an ideal east-southeast exposure, at an altitude ranging between 270 and 300 metres. The estate's vines, many of which are over sixty years old, thrive on shallow soils low in organic matter. This unique terroir, nicknamed "Terre de Lapin" (Rabbit Land), consists of layered limestone scree, red sandy marl and iron-rich gravel, resting on a bedrock of white oolite. The vineyard is worked with horses, in strict adherence to biodynamic principles.
The vintage
This year's climatic conditions allowed for optimal fruit maturity while preserving excellent natural acidity, ensuring balance and freshness.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for the Marsannay Village "Clos du Roy" 2022 are hand-harvested with rigorous sorting. The winemaking process incorporates a high proportion of whole clusters, generally between 80 and 90%. Fermentation begins spontaneously through indigenous yeasts, in wooden foudres and stainless steel tanks. After an extended maceration and a very gentle vertical pressing, the wine undergoes natural malolactic fermentation. Bottling is carried out without prior filtration.
