Bettane+Desseauve

A wine of great style, exceptionally sensual, with pronounced minerality and a racy character.

The 2014 Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has an open nose with red berry fruit, iron piping, orange rind and light marine scents. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins. Quite structured and gruff, it needs a bit more flesh to come through on the slightly leathery finish.

Description

A powerful and elegant Clos de la Roche wine

The estate

Founded in 1872 by William Ponsot, who at the time also owned Clos des Monts Luisants, Domaine Ponsot is still cultivated as a monopoly today. The lower part of this hillside vineyard, classified Grand Cru in 1936, was renamed Clos de la Roche. Today, the family estate, owned by Laurent, Rose-Marie, Catherine and Stéphanie Ponsot, offers exceptional wines from these two legendary plots.

The vineyard

Domaine Ponsot is the biggest estate in the hamlet of Clos de la Roche, owning 3 hectares. This Burgundy Clos owes its name to an enigmatic rock which may have been used for sacrificial rites by the Celts on the Morey-Saint-Denis hill, above the vines of the Pierre Virant hamlet.

The wine

This "Cuvée Vieilles Vignes" is a Clos de la Roche Grand Cru wine that stems from vines on average 65 years old which are cultivated on a clay-limestone soil.

Winemaking and ageing

Harvested by hand. Destemmed then fermented in wooden temperature-controlled vats. Indigenous yeasts. Ageing for a period of 18 months in old French oak casks.

Blend

Pinot Noir (100%)
