Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Engelgarten 2023 Domaine Marcel Deiss
Tasting
Color
This white wine from France reveals a beautiful golden hue, reflecting remarkable visual intensity.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet stands out for its vivacity and brightness. It exudes seductive citrus notes, such as lemon zest and orange blossom, intertwined with delicate touches of white flowers and exotic fruits. A subtle minerality with herbaceous accents rounds out this olfactory ensemble.
Palate
From the very first sip, the palate offers a crisp texture carried by a mineral backbone and exceptional freshness. As the tasting progresses, delicious flavors of mirabelle plum, yellow peach, and ripe white-fleshed fruits come to the fore. This dry, medium-bodied wine seduces with its creamy fullness, perfectly balanced by lovely tension. The long, straight finish lingers on fine tannins and savory saline, zesty notes.
Food and wine pairing
Thanks to its mineral profile and beautiful acidity, this wine pairs wonderfully with seafood, such as langoustines, shrimp flambéed with citrus, or poached lobster. It also enhances steamed white fish served with asparagus, herb-roasted poultry, as well as regional gastronomic specialties like terrines and charcuterie. When it comes to cheese, it pairs perfectly with aged pressed cheeses like Parmesan or with goat and sheep cheeses.
Service and storage
Renowned for its exceptional aging potential, the Engelgarten 2023 will develop beautifully in the cellar and can be enjoyed until around 2043.
Other characteristics
Despite its lovely fruit ripeness, this wine stands out for its distinctly dry profile.
The authentic expression of a great Alsace terroir
The estate
Founded in 1947 by Marcel Deiss upon his return from the war, Domaine Marcel Deiss is an iconic figure of the Alsace vineyards. Spanning 26 hectares, this estate has distinguished itself through its commitment to reviving co-planting, a historic regional practice. Today, Mathieu Deiss runs the estate alongside his father Jean-Michel, upholding a winemaking philosophy centered on the pure expression of terroir rather than grape variety. A true laboratory for sustainable development, the estate is renowned worldwide for its distinctive cuvées and its environmentally conscious approach.
The vineyard
Located in the village of Bergheim, at the heart of Alsace, the Engelgarten plot, nicknamed the "Garden of Angels," benefits from a full south-facing exposure on gentle slopes. This unique terroir rests on alluvial gravel soils mixed with clay and marl. Planting density here is particularly high, forcing the vines to draw resources from deep underground, which creates a natural water stress favorable to aromatic concentration. The vineyard is cultivated according to biodynamic principles, promoting biodiversity through natural cover crops and meticulous ecosystem management.
The vintage
The year 2023 proved particularly favorable for producing white wines in the region. The growing cycle benefited from a climate offering an ideal balance between warmth and acidity retention. These mild weather conditions allowed the various grape varieties to reach physiological maturity simultaneously, ensuring a healthy and high-quality harvest.
Winemaking and aging
The Engelgarten 2023 is crafted using a minimalist approach. After hand-harvesting and rigorous sorting, the whole clusters undergo an extremely slow pressing that can last up to twelve hours. Fermentation begins naturally through indigenous yeasts in large neutral oak barrels, without any artificial temperature control. The wine is then aged on its total lees for twelve months, without racking, fostering natural complexity. Bottling is carried out without fining or filtration.
Grape varieties
This wine comes from a co-planting bringing together Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, and Muscat.
