Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Densely packed with dark plum, boysenberry and black cherry reduction notes, this is nonetheless reserved in style, as graphite, alder, black tea and sweet tobacco nuances flicker in the background. The finish is tightly coiled, but the fruit stays prominent right through to the very end. Just in need of some cellar time. Best from 2024 through 2038. 700 cases made, 150 cases imported.

Brilliant violet. Ripe dark fruit, floral and exotic spice aromas, along with suggestions of licorice and smoky minerals. Chewy and focused on entry and then more fluid in the midpalate, offering liqueur-like bitter cherry, blackberry and boysenberry flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. Closes very long and precise, with resonating floral and spice notes and steadily building tannins lending final grip.

The wine is silky, lush, fresh and peppery. The fruit has lift, tannin, crushed stones, spice and sweet, energetic dark red berries. Offering a juicy wave of peppery red fruits with vibrancy, minerality and freshness, you also find a long, spicy, kirsch note that lingers in the finish. The wine was produced from a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Cinsault and 10% Counouise.

Description

The refinement and aromatic expression of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wine

The property

Purchased in 1905 by the Daumen family, the Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has experienced unprecedented growth since 1990, when Jean-Paul Daumen joined the family property.

This man, passionate about his terroir, develops an ecological management of the vineyard through the limitation of treatments, the abandonment of chemical products in favor of biodynamics.

Through the quality and aromatic palette of its cuvées, the Domaine de la Vieille Julienne has become over the vintages an essential reference of the wines of the Rhône Valley.

The wine

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux 2017 from Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is the result of a natural approach to winemaking and an exceptional terroir. Conducted according to the precepts of biodynamics and Demeter Certified, this 2.8-hectare vineyard with vines approximately 70 years old rests on a soil composed of quartzite pebbles, red clay, and rare yellow sands.

Vinification and aging

The manually harvested grapes undergo two successive sorts, in the vineyard and in the cellar. The vinification is carried out using indigenous yeasts, without sulfur. Maceration of 20 days followed by a light extraction. The aging of one year in oak barrels is followed by an additional 6 months of aging in bottles.

Blend

Grenache (65%), mourvèdre (20%) counoise and cinsault (15%).
