Description

Characteristics and tasting notes of the Saint-Joseph 2024 from Domaine Courbis

Tasting notes

Appearance
A beautiful deep ruby hue.

Nose
Highly spiced, it unveils aromas of black fruits such as blackberry and cherry, complemented by notes of cocoa bean, liquorice and pepper. Floral touches of peony and violet, along with a hint of leather, round out this elegant bouquet.

Palate
Powerful and elegant, the palate offers generous richness with a fleshy structure. The tannins are quite present, lending the wine a rather rustic yet perfectly balanced style, extending into a long, lingering finish.

The authentic expression of Syrah in the Rhône Valley by Domaine Courbis

The estate

Located in Châteaubourg in the northern Rhône Valley, Domaine Courbis draws on a family winemaking heritage dating back to 1587. Today, the estate is run by brothers Laurent and Dominique Courbis, who took over the operation in 1988. At the helm of a vineyard of around 40 hectares, they have successfully modernised practices while preserving the identity of the terroirs. Recognised as a benchmark producer, this prestigious name stands out for its sustainable viticulture and crafts cuvées of remarkable consistency, perfectly reflecting the richness of the local appellations.

The vineyard

The vines devoted to this Saint-Joseph are located in the southernmost part of the appellation, about eight kilometres from Tournon. This unique terroir, positioned on the 45th parallel at the confluence of the Rhône and the Isère, benefits from an ideal temperate climate. The soils are composed of 70% granitic arenas (granite sands) and 30% clay-limestone, supplemented by ancient alluvial deposits. This geology promotes excellent drainage and allows the vines to draw all the complexity needed to produce great wines.

Winemaking and ageing

To craft this 2024 vintage, the berries are hand-harvested in small crates before being fully destemmed. Fermentation takes place in closed, temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with the temperature maintained between 30 and 32°C to extract maximum colour. Maceration lasts 12 to 15 days. The wine is then aged for 9 to 10 months, with 33% in vat and the remaining 67% in barrels that have held two to five previous vintages.
