Description
The elegance and complexity of a great white wine from La Rioja
The estate
Founded in 1879 in Haro by the brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa, the Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) is a historic institution of La Rioja. Still under the control of the founding family, with Victor Urrutia currently at its head, the company created Viñedos del Contino in 1973. This 62-hectare estate stands out as the first château-style concept with a single vineyard in the region, illustrating a constant pursuit of excellence and expression of terroir.
The vineyard
Located in the sub-zone of Rioja Alavesa, the vineyard stretches across a meander of the Ebro, protected by the Cerro de la Mesa hill. The vines benefit from southern exposure and are rooted in varied soils composed of alluvium, limestone, sand, and clay. The San Gregorio parcel was planted in 1980, while some viura vines are over eighty years old. The estate also stands out for its ZERYA certification, guaranteeing pesticide residue-free viticulture.
Winemaking and aging
After manual harvesting, the grapes for this Contino "San Gregorio Blanco" 2022 undergo skin maceration before being pressed. Fermentation takes place separately in stainless steel tanks for approximately three weeks. The wine is then aged on fine lees for twelve months, with 30% in concrete tanks and 70% in new and used French oak barrels.
