Vinum

Multi-layered aromas of spices and berries; full-bodied attack, velvety development, first-class tannins, freshness, elegance and breed; a complete wine.

Decanter

High-toned blue fruits, strawberries and red cherries. Appealing chew to the fruit (cherries and blackcurrants). I like the initial impression, but the tannins, while supple and firm, are quite powerful at the moment. Good length.

James Suckling

Redcurrant and sweet-berry aromas with flowers and tile. It’s medium- to full-bodied with firm yet polished tannins and a juicy finish. Savory and lightly peppery at the end. Give the tannins time to soften. Try after 2024.

The 2019 Clos René shows impressive clarity and terroir expression on a focused nose of vivid red berry fruit; black truffle and sage aromas emerge with time. The palate is well balanced with a fleshy opening, then builds toward a quite substantial, complex, slightly savory and certainly peppery finish. Superb.

Medium-bodied, soft, fresh and already sporting a nose filled with mint leaf, cherries and mocha. Approachable, fresh, vibrant and already easy to like, with all of its spicy cherries, you can drink this just about on release, or age it for a bit for more secondary nuances. Drink from 2023-2036.

Dark garnet colour. Hints of wet earth, darker and fresh fruit like blueberry and cassis with some liquorice and dry spices. A dense and structured wine with a rich tannic backbone, youthful yet ripe and grainy, with elegant wild fruit, a fresh acidity giving lift, ripe and generous with a long, grippy finish. A structured, age-worthy style.

The 2019 Clos Rene showed well, although it doesn't have the aromatic purity and vibrancy of the top wines. Giving up plenty of darker cherry and currant-like fruits as well as spice, leather, and loamy earth, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, beautiful tannins, and just the polished, pure, balanced style that's so prevalent in Pomerol in 2019. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following 15-20.

Bettane+Desseauve

[ En Primeur 2019 scores: 92 ] Juiciness and a silky length perfectly drape the wine’s slender framework. It’s already charming, and this appeal should last for at least two decades. A wine that is increasingly refined.

Le Figaro Vin

A nose of juicy strawberry, wild blackberry and vanilla sugar, with a pleasing herbal freshness. The palate is lively and taut, with lovely notes of fresh red fruit and a fine, grainy tannin texture. Plenty of elegance and distinction in this wine, which carries you on a long stroll through the heart of the forest.

Description

A great red wine from Pomerol

The property
With very ancient origins, the Château Clos René was formerly named "Reney" on the map of the engineer-geographer Pierre de Belleyme. The château has been in the hands of the same family for several generations. It is now managed by Jean-Marie Garde.

The vineyard
The Clos René vineyard is located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau. With an average age of 35 years, the vineyard of Château Clos René extends over 15 hectares. The vines are planted on gravel and ancient sands dating from the Quaternary period, resting on iron slag subsoils. The vineyard is mainly composed of merlot (70%), cabernet franc (20%) and malbec (10%).

Vinification
The vinification of Château Clos René is carried out in thermoregulated cement vats. The wine undergoes aging in oak barrels for 18 months, of which 30% is new wood renewed each year. Fining with fresh egg whites.
