Decanter

Strawberry and raspberry fruit on the palate, though a little dry and severe on the mid-palate, with fine tannins allowing the creamy chalkiness to come in and dial back the fruit-forward character a touch. But I like the slatey grip with crushed stones and a cool, minty-fresh finish.

A chewy and rather chunky red with black cherries and chocolate. Medium body. Slightly rustic and dense. Give it a couple of years to soften.

The second wine of the Château is the 2021 Chevalier De Lascombes, which is based on 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 16 months in once-used oak. Its healthy ruby hue is followed by a beautiful 2021 offering bright cassis and ripe black cherry fruit supported by classic spice, tobacco, and gravelly earth notes. It's ripe, medium-bodied, has fine tannins, and an elegant style.

Underpowered on the opening notes, although it is packed with spiced cloves, raspberry and greengage plum, and leans into the vintage. Yields at 41 hl/ha, and a near-month-long harvest stretching from September 29 to October 22.

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2021 Chevalier de Lascombes is deep garnet-purple in color. It leaps from the glass with ready-to-go notes of kirsch and mulberries, leading to hints of dried roses, Sichuan pepper, and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate is soft-textured and lively, with just enough flavor and a peppery finish.

Le Figaro Vin

Elegant on the nose, fresh and charming, with lovely notes of aromatic herbs and sap. Smooth and silky on the palate, this is a wine that’s sure to please a wide audience.

Yves Beck

Delicate and filigreed, Chevalier de Lascombes shows a gourmand, velvety character. The slightly suave attack is complemented by the freshness of the acidic structure, resulting in a harmonious and sapid wine.

Vertdevin

The nose is fruity, fresh, and approachable. It reveals notes of fresh/crunchy blackcurrant, blackberry and, more lightly, fresh cherry, along with touches of violet, fine hints of licorice, discreet floral hints/almost oleander, and discreet hints of zan (licorice candy). The palate is fruity and offers minerality, freshness, a fresh backbone, good definition, a certain indulgence, precision, a linear feel (in the sense of elegance), a tangy thread, and a touch of straightforwardness. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of fresh blackcurrant, juicy/fresh raspberry and, more lightly, crunchy red berries, combined with touches of lily, blackberry, zan (licorice candy), a fine hint of chocolate/cocoa, and fine hints of toasted almond. There is indulgence and a very fine chew on the finish/persistence. The tannins are precise, fine, and already offer a certain suppleness.

Description

A fresh and balanced Second Wine from the Margaux appellation

The estate

Bearing the surname of the knight (chevalier), Antoine de Lascombes, since the 17th century, Château Lascombes has been marked by the ten generations of owners who have shaped its history. Since 2011, it has been owned by the mutual insurance group MACSF. The wines at Château Lascombes are recognised as ranking amongst the greatest in the Margaux appellation.

The vineyard

Château Lascombes produces Margaux wine from a 120-hectare vineyard. This vineyard enjoys mosaic of plots where the soils are made up, depending on their location, of gravelly hilltops, clayey gravels and clay-limestone plots.

The wine

Chevalier de Lascombes is the Second Wine of the estate.

Vinification and ageing

Manually harvested, the grapes are sorted and then destemmed. Light crushing occurs during vatting. Pre-fermentation maceration lasts for 10 days at 8°C. Alcoholic fermentation is followed by classic vinification, with daily, light pumping over to promote extraction. Following malolactic fermentation in barrels, ageing lasts for 4 months on lees.

The blend

Chevalier de Lascombes 2021 comprises a blend of Merlot (50%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (50%).
