Wine Enthusiast

Roger Voss

90–92. Barrel Sample. A lightly structured wine, this has plenty of the intense freshness of the vintage. Its tannin core melds with the pure black currant flavors to give a wine that will develop well over the medium-term.

Decanter

A touch of exotic spice, sweet cinnamon, white pepper, raisins, dried fruit and red cherries. This has a lovely, dense and chewy texture with bright red fruit flavours such as raspberries, strawberries and red cherries. Fruit-forward and confident. Acidity keeps things lifted and fresh, and this has an appealing brightness, even a touch too bright at this point—the acidity and fruit need more time to integrate.

James Suckling

Pleasing nose of blackberries, blueberries, stones, sage and rosemary. Medium-bodied with medium tannins and bright acidity. Fresh, juicy and fruity. Drink or hold.

Leve Jeff

Medium-bodied and already showing off its tobacco, cherry and cassis core, the wine is soft, bright and crisp with a focus on the lift and freshness in the red berry finish. 86-88 Pts

The Wine Independent

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Peyrabon is made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31.5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 3.5% Petit Verdot. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it offers wonderfully spicy scents of cinnamon, cloves, and Sichuan pepper over a core of warm cassis and pencil shavings with a hint of cardamom. Medium-bodied, the palate shows vibrant black fruits with loads of spicy accents and a soft texture, finishing with impressive length.

Le Figaro Vin

One of the finest vintages of Peyrabon. The nose shows beautiful complexity and maturity, with pure, ripe fruit alongside delicious peppery and tobacco notes; the palate lives up to it, broad and fleshy, with present but measured tannins and a long, fresh finish. Full of potential.

Yves Beck

A bouquet of good intensity revealing notes of blackcurrant and blackberry, followed by refreshing nuances of eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine has pep and a lovely aromatic intensity. The tannins have your back and are aligned with the temperament of the acidic structure. A wine with character, finesse, and excellent ageing potential! If there is one wine I completely missed during my en primeur tastings, it’s this one. Such a discrepancy is not acceptable, but well… nobody’s perfect. Mea culpa.

Vertdevin

This wine benefits from decanting. The nose shows concentration, a certain power, fine grain and elegance. It reveals notes of wild black cherry, blackcurrant and, more subtly, grey pepper, joined by small touches of violet as well as fine hints of licorice, black tea and racy minerality (almost discreetly iodized). The palate is fruity, balanced, precise and long, offering minerality, freshness, good definition, a lovely glycerol texture, fine straightness and elegance. On the palate, the wine expresses notes of pulpy/juicy blackberry, vibrant blackcurrant and, more slightly, pulpy/juicy black cherry, combined with touches of violet, small red berries, and fine hints of licorice, racy/gravelly minerality and a hint of black tea. Good length. The tannins are precise and relatively supple. There is a fine saline/iodized note and well-judged underlying bitters.

Description

The style of a great Haut-Médoc red wine built for aging

The estate
Located in the Haut-Médoc appellation, on the doorstep of Pauillac, Château Peyrabon is nestled in a lush green setting. Owned by Patrick Bernard since 1998, Château Peyrabon has undergone significant restructuring and modernization, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Classified as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur, Château Peyrabon is a very fine reference in the Haut-Médoc. It offers wines that are representative of the appellation, elegant and powerful, with superb aging potential.

The vineyard
Located in the commune of Saint-Sauveur Médoc, this Haut-Médoc vineyard spreads across approximately 37 hectares of vines aged 28 years on average, planted on sandy gravel resting on a clay subsoil. Clay-limestone soils are found on 5 hectares of the vineyard. The vineyard holds ISO14001-2015 and HVE (High Environmental Value) certifications, with phytosanitary protection managed through sustainable agriculture.

The vintage
For this 2019 vintage, the harvest was carried out manually. It began on September 25 for the Merlot and ended on October 11 with the Cabernet.

Winemaking and aging
Temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vat room. Vinification by homogeneous batches based on anthocyanin content mapping. Low-temperature fermentation at 24-25°C. Gentle extraction via adapted pump-overs, punch-downs, and rack-and-return. Average maceration period of 21 days. Pressing using controlled vertical presses to ensure very gradual extraction. Traditional aging in barrels for 14 months (25% new oak).

Blend
This Château Peyrabon 2019 comprises a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (31.5%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (3.5%).
